LAKEPORT, Calif. – The talent showcase “Lake County Live!” continues this month at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre in Lakeport, featuring the talented ensemble Rural Jazz Project.

The show will take place beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 28.

The Rural Jazz Project features Tom Aiken on keyboard and Steve DuBois on drums, along with Rick LeVasseur on bass and the talents of Dave Borjon. Joining the group and returning to Lake County Live! is local saxophone artist Jim Leonardis.

The show is live in the theater and is also broadcast live on Lake County Community Radio, KPFZ, at 88.1 FM, as well as streamed live on the Internet at www.kpfz.org .

Joining the musical performers this month will be the return of Ladies of the Lake, the Dogs of Clearlake and a few surprises along the way.

“Every month we ask our performers and audience to give their support to local artists and musicians, and every month they continue to amaze and entertain us,” said show creator and host Doug Rhoades. “I think there is an unending well of talent here in Lake County, and our program is designed to showcase that talent and provide a venue to promote it.”

Joining Rhoades and the musical performers this month will be Richard Smith, Pam Bradley, Vicky Parish Smith and Kris Andre, along with show announcer Mitchell Hauptman.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – On Saturday, July 6, Habitat for Humanity Lake County celebrated the dedication of its 17th home with the home’s owners, the Swift family.

Along with family, friends, volunteers and staff, Mendo Lake Credit Union was on hand to present the new homeowners with a check for $500 to help in furnishing their new home.  

This was Habitat’s first home completed in the city of Lakeport, a project that could not have been completed without the generosity of the organization’s many volunteers and donors.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – A lawnmower appears to have been the cause of a fire that burned in the city of Clearlake on Saturday.

Firefighters from around the county responded to the Denton Fire, located in the 3200 block of Denton Lane off of Old Highway 53. The incident was first dispatched before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lake County Fire Protection District and Cal Fire shared unified command on the fire, which was contained at about 7 p.m., according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Chris Jurasek.

Lake County Fire Battalion Chief Charlie Diener said the fire burned a total of about 18 to 20 acres.

The fire had burned near a number of residences. Diener said one garage had slight fire damage but no other structures were damaged or lost.

In addition to Lake County Fire and Cal Fire, resources came to assist from Lakeport Fire, Kelseyville Fire, Northshore Fire, South Lake County Fire and the US Forest Service, Diener said.

An in-county task force of engines and water tenders, and a Cal Fire strike team also responded from Mendocino County, according to reports from the scene.

“We needed a lot of resources,” Diener explained.

The Cal Fire Command Center reported that Cal Fire sent 13 engines, five crews, two dozers, three air tankers, two helicopters and an air tanker, along with command staff.

The Denton Fire burned right up to Highway 53 and jumped over it, with Jurasek reporting a few small fire spots burned on the other side of the roadway.

The fire's close proximity to the roadway caused officials to close Highway 53 between Highway 20 and Olympic Drive for close to two hours.

A portion of Highway 53 from Highway 20 to Old Highway 53 was reopened at around 7:30 p.m., but the remaining stretch to Olympic Drive was expected to be closed until midnight, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Diener anticipated a Lake County Fire engine would remain on scene throughout the night.

“There was extensive mop up that needed to be done,” he said.

The fire appeared to be mechanical in nature, with Diener explaining that firefighters believed the fire had been caused by a lawnmower.

During the summer, it's important not to mow past 10 a.m. and to have a garden hose or other water source available when doing such mowing work, Diener said.

Astronomers working with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have deduced the actual color of a planet orbiting another star 63 light-years away.

The planet is HD 189733b, one of the closest exoplanets that can be seen crossing the face of its star, and its color is cobalt blue. If seen directly, this planet would look like a deep blue dot, reminiscent of Earth’s color as seen from space.

Hubble’s Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph measured changes in the color of light from the planet before, during and after a pass behind its star. There was a small drop in light and a slight change in the color of the light.

“We saw the light becoming less bright in the blue but not in the green or red. Light was missing in the blue but not in the red when it was hidden,” said research team member Frederic Pont of the University of Exeter in South West England. “This means that the object that disappeared was blue.”

Earlier observations have reported evidence for scattering of blue light on the planet. The latest Hubble observation confirms the evidence.

Although the planet resembles Earth in terms of color, it is not an Earth-like world.

On this turbulent alien world, the daytime temperature is nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and it possibly rains glass – sideways – in howling, 4,500-mile-per-hour winds.

The cobalt blue color comes not from the reflection of a tropical ocean as it does on Earth, but rather a hazy, blow-torched atmosphere containing high clouds laced with silicate particles.

Silicates condensing in the heat could form very small drops of glass that scatter blue light more than red light.

Hubble and other observatories have made intensive studies of HD 189733b and found its atmosphere to be changeable and exotic.

HD 189733b is among a bizarre class of planets called hot Jupiters, which orbit precariously close to their parent stars.

HD 189733b was discovered in 2005. It is only 2.9 million miles from its parent star, so close that it is gravitationally locked. One side always faces the star and the other side is always dark.

In 2007, NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope measured the infrared light, or heat, from the planet, leading to one of the first temperature maps for an exoplanet.

The map shows day side and night side temperatures on HD 189733b differ by about 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This should cause fierce winds to roar from the day side to the night side.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – State and local firefighters are working on a wildland fire burning within the city of Clearlake.

The fire, located in the 3200 block of Denton Lane off of Old Highway 53, was first dispatched shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lake County Fire Protection and Cal Fire hold unified command on the incident, with an in-county task force of engines and water tenders responding to assist. A Cal Fire engine strike team also was en route from Mendocino County shortly after 5 p.m.

At about 5 p.m. the size of the fire was estimated at five acres, according to radio reports.

The fire jumped Highway 53, with incident command reporting that there were multiple fire spots on both sides of the highway with structures threatened.

Reports from the scene indicated that about 10 local fire units and several more from Cal Fire were on scene, with additional resources en route. Air resources, including helicopters and tankers, also were assigned.

Clearlake Police were blocking off Highway 53 and Olympic because of the fire jumping the highway, with additional fire resources being called to stage in that area.

Shaky containment was reported on the main fire at about 5:45 p.m., with the smaller spot fires on the west side of the highway – which burned about an acre total – contained, according to incident command.

The USGS has upgraded the magnitude of this quake from 3.4 to 3.7.

COBB, Calif. – A 3.7-magnitude earthquake was reported near The Geysers geothermal steamfield on Sunday afternoon.

The moderately sized quake occurred at 3:40 p.m., according to the US Geological Survey.

It was centered two miles northwest of The Geysers and 13 miles southwest of Clearlake, at a depth of 2.1 miles, the survey reported.

No shake reports had been submitted to the survey shortly after 4 p.m., however Lake County News received reports from a reader in the Cobb area who felt it.

A 3.2-magnitude quake was reported near The Geysers on Thursday, July 4, according to US Geological Survey records.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The Tallman Hotel and Blue Wing Saloon Restaurant in Upper Lake have announced the lineup for their seventh annual Blue Wing Blues Festival, which takes place Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4, with a followup date on Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Starting at 5:45 p.m. each day, top blues musicians will perform on the veranda of the hotel with the audience gathered in the intimate garden between the hotel and restaurant.

Headliners this year include David Landon, Paul Steward, Jackie Payne, Steve Lucky, Wendy DeWitt and Lara Price.

“It’s a nice time of day and a great spot to enjoy world-class music,” said hotel and restaurant owner Bernie Butcher, who has put Lake County on the blues map with live music in the restaurant on Monday nights in addition to the annual festival. “With a gourmet barbecue dinner thrown in with the price of admission, people really seem to enjoy the festival.”

Opening each evening for the August headliners will be Barry “Big B” Brenner, making his third appearance at the festival.

“Barry’s a great guy and a lot of fun,” said Butcher. “We’re lucky to have him up here again from his base in Los Angeles.”

Originally from Chicago’s South Side, Brenner plays his 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars as well as metal bodied resonator guitars that amplify the sound mechanically. Brenner’s music channels the authentic sounds of Mississippi delta blues.

With five popular CDs to his credit, David Landon brings his full six-piece band from the Bay Area to headline the opening night Friday, Aug. 2.

After attending college in Boston, Landon moved to Paris where he and his band became a fixture on the club scene. He has built a strong Bay Area reputation since moving here in 1994.

“David has stirred the crowd a few times with his three piece band at our Monday Blues,” said Butcher, “but when I heard him in San Francisco with a full horn section I knew we had to get him up for the festival.”

Local audiences are familiar with the high energy danceable blues of Twice As Good, who will headline the show on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Led by Paul Steward on guitar, sax and vocals with his dad Rich on rhythm guitar and Frankie J on keyboards, this group has moved from its local base to travel nationally and produce award-winning CDs. The band has invited Jackie Payne to do a guest appearance for this show. A seasoned blues personality with a voice reminiscent of Otis Rush, Jackie has headlined shows and festivals around the world.

The show on Sunday, Aug. 4, features Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums with Steve on keyboards and lead singer Carmen Getit on guitar.

Called “Instant Crowd Favorites” by the San Francisco Blues Festival and “Consummate musicians and entertainers” by New York City’s Lincoln Center, Lucky and Getit really shine before a live audience, bringing an intense energy and sheer personal magnetism to the stage. The band tends to dress 1940s be-bop style, so ticket holders may follow suit if they wish.

Labor Day Sept. 2 is Ladies Day at the Festival. Opening that evening will be the popular “Queen of Boogie Woogie” Wendy DeWitt backed by Kirk Harwood on percussion.

Then a wild night at the Blue Wing with the six piece all-female Girls Got the Blues band led by Lara Price and featuring such female stars as vocalist Pam Hawkins, Nancy Wright on sax and Janice Maxie Reid on keyboards.

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol has released the names of a woman who was seriously injured and her two children who were killed in a crash east of Clearlake Oaks earlier this week.

Archie Damayo, 38, of Shasta suffered major injuries, while her 9-year-old daughter Dara Damayo and 8-year-old son, Gem Damayo, died at the scene of the wreck, which took place Tuesday afternoon on Highway 20 near Old Long Valley Road, as Lake County News has reported.

The CHP said Archie Damayo was driving her 2001 Toyota Sienna van eastbound on Highway 20 with her two children belted in the back seat when the crash occurred.

Damayo was heading down a slight downhill grade at an unknown speed when she made what the CHP called an “unsafe turning movement.”

That caused the van to rotate to the left and enter the eastbound lane in the path of a Lake County Special Districts-owned Ford F-450 pickup driven by 42-year-old Steven Chapin of Finley, with the pickup hitting the van's right side.

Firefighters arriving a short time later declared the children deceased, while their mother was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Chapin suffered minor injuries.

NICE, Calif. – Firefighters were able to quickly contain a small wildland fire that burned in an orchard in Nice on Sunday afternoon.

The fire, located at the corner of Collier Avenue and Highway 20, was first dispatched at around 2:45 p.m. Sunday, according to radio reports.

Firefighters arriving on scene encountered a growing column of smoke and some wind, reports from the scene indicated.

Northshore Fire responded, with Cal Fire also sending a full wildland response. However, the fire was reported contained shortly before 3 p.m., with additional resources canceled.

The fire was contained at one acre, with no structures involved, radio reports indicated.

Reports from the scene indicated firefighters would remain on scene for two hours to mop up.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – Rural Northern California counties put in a strong showing at the California State Fair's Counties Exhibits Competition.

Lake County won a gold award and a Best of Division for community built exhibits, a new award in the competition this year, the state fair reported.

This year's fair exhibit was built by a group that included retired County Administrative Officer Kelly Cox, and deputy administrative officers Eric Seely and Alan Flora.

Cox said the Lake County exhibit received a lot of positive comments from members of the public at the fair on Friday.

The team that built the bee-themed Glenn County exhibit, the Salvagno family, celebrated their 10th anniversary of building Glenn County’s exhibit at the California State Fair by winning the Best of Show Award.

Although they have won silver and gold awards in the past, Glenn County has never won the Best of Show Award until now.

Exhibit designer and Salvagno family member Terrie Barr, was near tears as she accepted the Golden Bear trophy on behalf of the county at a Friday awards ceremony in Sacramento.

In all, the state fair reported that awards were presented to 24 California counties exhibiting in this year's event.

The counties exhibit has been a longstanding fan favorite and continues to draw crowds of fairgoers every year who support their favorite county, according to fair officials.

In addition to Best of Division for Community Built Exhibits, this year's Counties Exhibits Competition includes another new award, Best of Division for Professionally Built Exhibits. Although the builders from the communities may be experts, they do not build exhibits for a living.

Silver awards went to El Dorado County, San Joaquin County and Shasta County.
