LAKEPORT – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 88 of Lake County, is offering boating safety and seamanship classes for the boating public.
The course will cover many subjects such as personal safety around water, basic boating information, boating law and rules of the road, basic operation of a variety of vessels, and accident prevention and rescue.
The first of the one-day courses will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Sheriff’s Department Training Room at the Lake County Detention Facility Campus, 4913 Helbush in Lakeport.
Additional courses will be held on June 9, July 21 and Aug. 18. Cost of material for the course is $25.
Flotilla 88 encourages the boating public to sign up for this important boating safety course. It has been proved that many injuries and accidents have been avoided and many lives have been saved by the knowledge acquired in the safe boating courses.

LAKEPORT – The Sierra Cub is leading a hike from Scotts Valley to Goat Rock this Saturday, May 5.
The group will follow the Glen Eden Trail for four miles to a nice lunch spot at Goat Rock in the upper Scotts Creek watershed.
The first half mile of the trail is steep and strenuous (and not for beginners) but after that it is a moderate climb over the ridge and down to Goat Rock.
Meet at 9 a.m. at the Glen Eden trail head, 8 miles out Scotts Valley Road from the 11th Street/Scotts Valley Road exit off Highway 29 in Lakeport. Bring lunch and water.
Call the leader, Linda Marie at 263-8902, in advance to reserve a spot. Limit is 12. Rain cancels.

LAKEPORT – Sutter Lakeside Wellness Center's T'ai Chi instructor Arch Kottler invites individuals to participate in World T'ai Chi & Qigong Day on Saturday, April 28.
To celebrate this special day Kottler will hold a free outdoor T'ai Chi class in the beautiful healing gardens located just outside the Wellness Center at 5176 Hill Road East in Lakeport from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Spectators and T'ai Chi enthusiasts are welcome to join in the global health and healing event.
Internationally, this event begins in New Zealand and will spread by time zones across the globe through 60 countries and across six continents. This healing wave will promote calm and wellness worldwide.
T'ai Chi and Qigong (Chi Kung) are health technologies evolved over several thousand years of research in China and are growing in popularity worldwide. They are used in hospitals, wellness centers, businesses, prisons, schools and other institutions.
Research shows that T'ai Chi and Qigong have been shown to reduce anxiety, depression and chronic pain conditions. They boost the immune system, improve respiratory function, burn calories, dramatically improve balance, provide cardiovascular benefit, provide powerful stress management tools and slow aspects of the aging process.
T'ai Chi classes are held Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. at Sutter Lakeside Wellness Center.

COVELO – The Covelo Ranger District has now opened the Eel River Campground for the rest of the year.
The gates on M1 Indian Dick Road and M1 Etsel Ridge Road are still closed for the winter. They will reopcn when weather permits this spring.
The Mendocino National Forest will start selling wood permits April 2. Office hours are from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Turkey hunting season will start March 31 and last through until May 6.
The Forest Service has introduced a new recreation pass called "America the Beautiful." It is a National Park and Federal Recreation Land pass. If you are interested please call the district and they can send you a brochure on the pass. They also have available the Annual Pass, Senior Pass and Access pass.
