KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The Kelseyville Food Pantry will open its doors to those in need starting Tuesday, March 13, at the Kelseyville United Methodist Church at First and Main Streets in Kelseyville.

The pantry will be open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

Volunteers from the Kelseyville United Methodist Church, the Kelseyville Presbyterian Church and the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County have worked to organize and stock the pantry in preparation for the semi-monthly event.

The pantry has an ongoing need for donations of food, grocery bags and cash to sustain its mission and operations.

The following foods are needed: canned fruits, vegetables, meat products (like tuna, ham, chicken) and meals (such as meat stews, chili, ravioli), pasta, rice, soups, macaroni and cheese (boxed), peanut butter, and bags of dried beans are needed.

In addition, the pantry hopes to provide packages of dry milk, dry cereals, oatmeal and baby food as well.

Cash donations will be used to provide some fresh fruits and vegetables to its clients.

Donors are reminded that the pantry is not able to accept food stored in glass containers and cannot accept home-made canned goods or bulk quantities of dry goods.

The pantry needs ongoing contributions from the community and is accepting donations of nutritious canned and boxed foods at the following locations in Kelseyville:

  • Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Kelseyville Presbyterian Church, 5340 Third St., 707-279-1104;
  • Sunday, Monday or Wednesday, Kelseyville United Methodist Church, 3810 Main St. or 5250 First St. (the Thrift Shop), 707-279-4664;
  • By appointment – call Mary Amodio at 707-263-5759 or Pastor Wanda Celli at 707-245-0182.

“Looking for ways to address the problem of hunger in our community has been a focus of our outreach ministry during the past year,” said Wanda Celli, pastor of the Kelseyville United Methodist Church.

“In Lake County, 18 percent of the population lives below the poverty level, 26.1 percent of the children in Lake County live below poverty level. Almost 50 percent of the children living in Lake County are eligible for free or reduced meals,” said Celli. “While we know we cannot end hunger, we can address the problem in our local community and share the resources we are able to gather with those in need.”

The Kelseyville United Methodist Church also will participate in “Lake County CAN!” an event to stock seven local food pantries and to ship 20,000 meals overseas by partnering with “Stop Hunger Now.”

“Lake County CAN!” is being hosted by the Lake County Circuit of the United Methodist Church.

The circuit is comprised of the seven United Methodist Churches in Lake County.

The “Lake County CAN!” event will be held at the Upper Lake Community United Methodist Church on Friday, March 30 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and at the Clearlake United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 31, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Community participation at both events is welcome.

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – The Mendocino National Forest has tentatively scheduled a helitorch burn on Thursday, March 8, or Friday, March 9, depending on weather.

The burn will clear approximately 600 acres of brush off Forest Highway 7, at Long Point approximately 40 miles northwest of Willows.

Approximately 30 wildland firefighters and helicopter will supervise the operation.

Ecological restoration and an integrated approach to forest and natural resource management is a top priority for the Mendocino National Forest and prescribed burning is one of several tools used to restore overall forest health. Helitorch burning is one way to achieve this goal.

Helitorch burning is the controlled release of a flaming accelerant from a 55 gallon torch that looks like a barrel which is suspended from underneath the helicopter.

The method is utilized to burn large areas of brush in order to maintain fuel breaks and type conversions for wildlife and grazing.

The type conversions were created back in the 1950s by burning large areas of brush and replanting them with grass seed.

The forest burns to maintain these areas and keep the brush from encroaching on the unit.
