LAKEPORT, Calif. – The 1941 detective mystery classic, “The Maltese Falcon” screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, June 10, with show times at 1 and 6 p.m.

The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre and Mary Astor, and marks the film debut of Sydney Greenstreet and the directorial debut of John Huston.

The movie is considered to be the first in the film noir genre and was nominated for three Academy Awards.

The story follows a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around the North Coast during the coming week.

Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.

LAKE COUNTY

Highway 29

– AT&T of Sacramento has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility repairs near Wardlaw Street beginning Monday, June 2. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

MENDOCINO COUNTY

Highway 1

– Replacement of the Greenwood Creek Bridge will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Guardrail repairs near the junction of Routes 1/128 will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Sidewalk enhancements near the junction of Routes 1/20 will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

– Bob Stevens Photography of Manhattan Beach has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming near Camp 2 Tenmile Road Monday through Wednesday, June 2-4. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Intermittent full road closures will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Highway 20

– Sidewalk enhancements from the junction of Routes 1/20 and Boatyard Drive will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays. A shoulder closure will be in effect. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

Highway 101

– Caltrans will perform slide repairs near the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge (near Frog Woman Rock). Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

– Ramp improvements from the junction of Routes 101/253 and North State Street will begin Wednesday, June 4. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel, and motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Intermittent ramp closures will be in effect at South State Street/Route 253 (Exit 546), Talmage Road/Route 222 (Exit 548A), Gobbi Street (Exit 548B), Perkins Street (Exit 549), and North State Street (Exit 551). No two consecutive ramps will be closed at a time. Motorists will be advised to seek an alternate route.

– Highway construction from 1.0 mile south of the Haehl Overhead Bridge to the Haehl Overhead Bridge will continue. Nighttime work hours are 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays. Intermittent full road closures will be in effect to allow trucks to enter and exit the highway. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Highway construction from 0.8 to 1.5 miles south of the North Willits Railroad Crossing will continue. Nighttime work hours are 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays. Intermittent full road closures will be in effect to allow trucks to enter and exit the highway. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Preparations to move power lines from Reynolds Highway to Ryan Creek Road will occur on Friday, May 30. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Intermittent full road closures will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 128

– Guardrail repairs at the junction of Routes 1/128 will continue through Friday, May 30. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Highway repairs from the Shearing Creek Bridge to the Maple Creek Bridge will begin on Monday, June 2. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 175

– Bridge rehabilitation at the Russian River Bridge will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 222

– Ramp improvements at the junction of Routes 101/222 will begin Wednesday, June 4. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. Intermittent ramp closures will be in effect. Motorists will be advised to seek an alternate route.

Highway 253

– Ramp improvements at the junction of Routes 101/253 will begin Wednesday, June 4. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. Intermittent ramp closures will be in effect. Motorists will be advised to seek an alternate route.

Highway 271

– Verizon of Weaverville has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility repairs just south of the Humboldt/Mendocino County line. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

The Caltrans Traffic Operations Office has reviewed each project and determined that individual project delays are expected to be less than the statewide policy maximum of 30 minutes, unless noted otherwise above.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The Lake County Historical Society will hold its June barbecue meeting on Sunday, June 22, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum at 9921 State Highway 281 (Soda Bay Road) in Kelseyville.

Representatives from the Lake County Historical Society’s two museums, the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum in Kelseyville and the Gibson Museum & Cultural Center in Middletown will talk about the current focus and future plans for each museum, and will encourage potential volunteers and visitors to participate.

The LCHS operates the two museums in partnership with the county of Lake.

The Ely Stage Stop opened in 2011 and the Gibson Museum opened in May 2014 in the former Chauncey Gibson Library. Ely news and information can be found on the Web site http://elystagestop.com . Gibson news can be found at http://cgibsonmuseum.com .

Don Coffin and friends will perform traditional bluegrass music. Coffin also performs at the Ely’s Fiddle Jams on the first Sunday of each month.

The Lake County Historical Society will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, plates, utensils, napkins, bottled water and soft drinks. Please bring a dish to share. If your dish needs to be cold keep it on ice.

There is no charge for Lake County Historical Society members; admission for guests is $5 at the door.

The Ely Stage Stop is on Highway 281 (also called Soda Bay Road) about one mile north of the traffic signal at the Kit’s Korner intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 281. Watch for the Ely sign beside the road.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Deputy Sheriff's Association will host the annual Steel and Three Gun Challenge this Saturday, May 31.

The event will take place at the Highland Springs Range outside of Lakeport.

Check-in takes place from 7 to 8:30 a.m., with a safety briefing at 8:30 a.m. and the shoot to begin at 9 a.m.

The registration fee is $35 per person, which includes one T-shirt, one raffle ticket, one lunch ticket and entry into either the steel shoot or three gun shoot. Entry into the second shoot will be additional $10.

Steel divisions include junior (12-17 years), women's pistol, men's pistol, revolver, law enforcement and senior (65 years and up). The competition rules are limited to one division per shooter. Additional entries may be available on the day of the event.

Juniors will need to have a parent/guardian sign a waiver on the day of the event. Law enforcement only will be eligible to compete in the law enforcement division.  

On the Steel Course, each participant will shoot four courses of fire. Total score will be the combined time with any penalties added.  Prior to the match, all range and course rules will be covered by the rangemaster.

The Three Gun Course for 2014 is an individual event. Each competitor will be responsible for bringing their own rim fire rifle, shotgun and pistol for the event.  

A rim fire rifle and shotgun will be provided by the DSA for any competitor wishing to enter the event and do not own a rim fire rifle or shotgun, capable of firing slugs. All range and course rules will be covered by the rangemaster.

Only factory ammunition will be allowed; no reloads.

Awards include trophies for the top shooter in each steel division. The winner of each steel division will compete for the top gun award, the trophy for the top three gun competitors and bragging rights.

The Lakeport Volunteer Firefighter's Association will host a barbecue tri-tip lunch. The $10 per-plate coast includes sandwich, chips and a drink. Participants receive one lunch ticket with their entry.  Additional lunch tickets can be purchased at the event.

There will be raffle donations from local businesses, to include multiple guns. One need not be a competitor to enter raffle. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. You must be present to win.

T-shirts will be for sale the day of the event for $15 each for sizes medium, large and extra large, and $20 for XXL and XXXL.

UKIAH, Calif. – Caltrans reported that a safety project to improve onramps and offramps along US Highway 101 through Ukiah will begin Wednesday, June 4.  

This project will install a high-friction surface to increase traction all year round.

The high friction surface will be installed by first removing the existing pavement markings, then applying a coating of epoxy resin to the existing asphalt followed by a layer of synthetic aggregate, and finally the pavement will be restriped.  

The entire process is anticipated to be completed by the end of June.

Work will occur at night, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning.  

Traffic on US Highway 101 will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel, and motorist may experience minor traffic slowdowns.  

Selected ramps at South State Street/Route 253 (Exit 546), Talmage Road/Route 222 (Exit 548A), Gobbi Street (Exit 548B), Perkins Street (Exit 549), and North State Street (Exit 551) will be intermittently closed.  

No two consecutive ramps will be closed at a time. Motorists will be advised to seek an alternate route.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Join the Ely Stage Stop and Country Museum on Saturday, June 14, for its Picnic on the Porch.  

Celebrate the arrival of summer with a food and fun-filled day on the wrap-around porch looking out on Mt. Konocti.

The main house will showcase a quilt display loaned by Wilma Taylor and Victorian style beaded flowers and jewelry created by Ellen Dills. Select beaded pieces will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the museum.

In addition to the stagecoach and retired San Francisco cable car, seldom seen pieces of historic farm equipment can be viewed in the barn and on the grounds.

Hear live music of the Stage Coach Era performed by Don Coffin and friends. Enjoy local gourmet caterer Rosey Cooks’ seasonal box lunch and “trio of tasty treats” dessert.

Docents will be pouring lemonade or bring your own wine to sip in beautiful Ely Stage Stop wine glasses that will be available for purchase.

Bid on super silent auction items and buy tickets for bountiful raffle baskets. Bids and raffle tickets will be accepted through lunch with items awarded before the end of the afternoon.

Seating is limited so reserve now. Ely’s first picnic last year was a lot of fun and its return has been greatly anticipated.

The fun will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Lunch is typically served at noon. Event cost is $30/per person.
