KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – A “Peace Meal & Hootenanny” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Lakeside Park (also known as the County Park) near Kelseyville as part of the Lake County Summer of Peace.

Everyone is invited to this free event, which includes a potluck picnic and an old-fashioned musical sing-along.

“Hootenanny may be an unfamiliar word to some people, but it basically means a folk-music party,” said event coordinator Linda Guebert. “There’s something very special about singing with other people, especially when you’re singing about things that really matter, like peace and social justice.”

The hootenanny will feature a number of prominent Lake County musicians, including Jim Williams, Carl Stewart, Don Coffin, Sue Condit, Bill Bordisso, Bill Barrows, the trio Three Deep, Dennis Purcell, the duo Not Two and others.

“I’m very excited about participating in the hootenanny,” said Stewart, who is the lead singer of the acoustic band Blue Collar. “I’m especially pleased that my daughter Emma and her friend Raylana Aragon will be singing with us. It’s great to have young people involved.”

The peace meal (potluck picnic) will begin at 5 p.m., with the hootenanny following and going until about 9 p.m.

As well as food or drink to share, people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. Children are more than welcome. Please be aware that glass containers are not allowed in the park.

This special event is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The children’s nature education program at the Rodman Preserve will be held on Saturday, July 21, starting at 9 a.m. at the preserve near Upper Lake.

The program is presented by Lake County Land Trust volunteer and nature education specialist, Elaine Mansell and is free and open to youth age 7 to 12.

Mansell, who used to lead the Junior Rangers program at Clear Lake State Park, takes kids on a “Rodman Explorer,” adventure.

She encourages them to use their senses: the sense of sight will be experienced with eyes alone, binoculars, microscopes, examining animal tracks, scat, holes, trees, slough water, birds, insects, and mammals, she explained.

Hikers will open their ears to listen to and identify sounds and Rodman Explorers will use their sense of touch, by touching mammal skins, leaves, bark, plants, and shells to discover that there are many different surfaces and textures in nature.

The purpose of the program is to direct children to be observant, utilizing all of their senses rather than ambling through the woods aimlessly, Mansell explains. They will learn, enjoy, and commit to “leaving no trace.”

Reservations are appreciated and can be made by calling Elaine at 707-263-1637.

Parents are welcome and can either take a hike on the Rodman Preserve property, or stay with their children.
