LAKEPORT, Calif. – More than 30 Lakeport stores will open their doors to trick-or-treating youngsters in costume from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Families are invited to enjoy a safe and fun Halloween on Main Street concluding at 4 p.m. with a costume contest on Museum Square.

The event is free of charge and goes rain or shine.

Trophies and prizes will be awarded to winners of the costume contest in these categories: 0-4 years; 5-7 years; 8-12 years; 13-17 years, 18+ (adult) and family.

Maps indicating trick-or-treat locations will be available after Oct. 18 at participating businesses or at the Lakeport Main Street Association desk in the lobby of City Hall at Second and Park streets.

This event is sponsored by the Lakeport Main Street Association, a group of merchants, property owners and involved citizens who are working to build a better downtown Lakeport.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – All branches of the Lake County Library system will be closed Saturday, Oct. 6, to observe Columbus Day.

Normal hours at all branches will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has the best commercial enforcement program in the nation, according to the 2011 National Law Enforcement Challenge.  

Sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the annual competition challenges law enforcement agencies to make a difference in the communities they serve and allows agencies to learn from one another and establish future goals in traffic safety enforcement and education.

The CHP’s commercial enforcement program is being recognized for its efforts to reduce collisions and alcohol-related incidents involving trucks, increase the use of seat belts in commercial vehicles, and increase compliance with commercial vehicle speed laws.

“An achievement such as this can only be accomplished as a result of the tireless efforts of the men and women working for the California Highway Patrol,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Through their dedication and commitment to safety, the number of people killed in large truck-related crashes in California fell 40 percent between 2006 and 2010.”

The CHP is responsible for the oversight of approximately 7.4 million commercial vehicles, which travel approximately 30 million miles on 105,000 miles of roadway in California each year.

Last year, the CHP conducted more than 500,000 roadside inspections of commercial vehicles and drivers.  

Additionally, the CHP inspected and certified more than 23,000 school buses throughout the state.  

Through partnerships with industry advocates and commercial vehicle operators, the CHP provides a high level of education and technical assistance to ensure the safety of the motoring public.

“While it is an honor to be recognized by your peers, the real reward is the lives that are saved daily through the work of our commercial enforcement personnel in partnership with industry advocates and commercial vehicle operators,” added Commissioner Farrow.

The CHP’s commercial program was formally recognized for its efforts Tuesday during the IACP’s 119th Annual Conference and Exposition being held in San Diego.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. –  The 11th annual Saw Shop Gallery Bistro’s benefit dinner for Habitat for Humanity Lake County will be held on Monday, Nov. 5.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. at the bistro, 3825 Main St., Kelseyville.

This is the main funding event for Habitat for Humanity Lake County.  

The dinner will be a multicourse sit down meal.  

Guests will be serenaded by piano music played by David Neft.  

The funds received will go to support new home construction and critical health and safety repairs on existing homes in our community for deserving families who need a safe and decent place to live.

Costs of the dinner are donated to Habitat for Humanity including the food, wine, and the staff hours of the Saw Shop Gallery Bistro. This is a truly fun event.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Konocti Lioness Club is presenting it “Fall Fantasy Fashion Show” on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The show will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Buckingham Homeowners Association building,  2850 Eastlake Drive, Kelseyville.

Fashions will be provided by Accents on the Lake (Here for the Holidays). Gourmet appetizers by Rosie and local wines will be served.  

There will be a silent auction, raffles and much more.

Proceeds benefit in-need children of Lake County.  

The Konocti Lioness Club also supports Bear Skin Meadows Diabetes Camp, Camp Sign-Shine for the Deaf, Redwood Children Services Summer Camps, Wings of Hope Bereavement Camp and many other programs for the youngsters of Lake County.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Lake County Republican Women, Federated will meet Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at Main Street Bar & Grill, 14084 Lakeshore Drive, Clearlake.

Roseann Slonsky-Breault, president of California Federated Republican Women Northern Division, will give a firsthand account of the Republican Tampa convention.
