LAKEPORT, Calif. – In recognition of Family History Month, Lakeport Library. Will present a program called “First Steps in Family History Research” at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1425 N. High St.

Jan Cook of the library staff will introduce the basics of genealogy research and will cover resources available through the library.

Guests will have a chance to do some Internet research and will receive a packet of materials to take home.

On the subject of family history, Alex Haley commented in Roots, “In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage – to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.”

Mark Twain expressed a different view of genealogy: “Why waste your money looking up your family tree? Just go into politics and your opponents will do it for you.”

Genealogy is a puzzle with no end, a mystery that expands with every solution. Finding one ancestor leads to two more.

Everyone is welcome to attend this library program and to begin exploring his or her own unique heritage.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The docents and volunteers of the Ely Stage Stop and Country Museum are partnering with Wildhurst Vineyards to present a Fall Farm to Table winemaker’s dinner on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The event will be held at the beautifully restored Ely Stage Stop, located at 9921 Soda Bay Road (Highway 281) and is a benefit to help with the purchase price of the newly acquired stage coach that will be on display that evening.

Seating was limited to 20 people and the event has sold out.

The six course gourmet dinner will be prepared by Chic le Chef and each course will be paired with a Wildhurst wine.

Additionally, there will be live music and a storyteller speaking on the history of the stage stop, the people closely related to it – including the infamous highwaymen – and the areas of Lake County served by it.

The stage can still be viewed during regular museum hours, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Teen Car Control Clinic scheduled for this Saturday, Oct 20, at the Lakeside Family Fun Center parking lot on Lakeport Boulevard has room available but it’s best not to wait until late to register.

Parents – do you have a teen driver with a permit or who is newly licensed? This is exactly what most folks agree is the best way to prepare a teen for Lake County driving.

Active participation is encouraged, as is having teens drive their own car or their parents’ car. They will be driving for their first encounters with the local numerous two lane roads and their narrow, soft shoulders.

Each student is offered a chance to parallel park, back through cones, do heavy braking that activates the anti skid system most cars have today. Additionally, they also get to try out the figure eight skid pad to feel their car’s handling in the wet. The skid pad is wet down to simulate winter weather driving.  

In the two wheels off exercise, they encourage the drivers to feel the experience of two wheels off the roadway onto the shoulder and practice the proper technique of easing off the throttle, bringing their car under control and back onto the asphalt and then brake. This is simple but often not done right unless practiced in a controlled situation with an experienced driving coach doing the coaching.

The cost is $99 (scholarships are available).

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Green Party of Lake County will have its monthly meeting on Sunday, Oct. 21.

The group will meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the clubhouse at Lakeport Lagoons, 1800 S. Main St.

Guest speaker at 2 p.m. will be Mike Lunas, candidate for Lake County Superior Court judge.

They also will have a speaker from the local anti-GMO community to speak on proposition 37, the GMO labeling law.

The group may have a speaker on Measure E, the county sales tax proposal to clean up the lake.

They will talk about the group’s trip to Napa to see Jill Stein, Green Party Presidential candidate, on Sept. 25.

There will be a light potluck; bring something if you wish.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Cache Creek Catering and Lake County Wine Studio are hosting a special three-course Central American Cuisine and wine pairing event on Sunday, Oct. 21, with guest chef, Carol Gibson.
 
Reservations are recommended for the event beginning at 11:30 a.m. and with the latest reservation time possible at 1:30 p.m.

Seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis.

The cost is $25 per person and $20 per person for Studio club members.

The menu will feature regional recipes from Honduras, Central America paired with Robledo Family wines.  

The first course will pair Pinot Blanc with grilled mini peppers stuffed with quinoa, summer vegetables and goat cheese.  

The second course will pair Tempranillo with banana leaf steamed pork tamales.  

The final course will pair Petite Sirah with a sweet and spicy meatball recipe from Gibson’s grandmother.

Gibson came to California from San Pedro Sula, Honduras at the age of 15, and settled in Potter Valley.   

She learned her home country’s style of cooking with regional foods and spices from her grandmother, Mama Lili, and works in the culinary field in Mendocino County.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Pacific Rampage Wrestling presents “Tricks and Treats” on Saturday, Oct. 27, with the main event featuring “The Franchise” Shane Douglas.

The event takes place at Lakeside Family Fun and Event Center, 872 Lakeport Blvd. in Lakeport.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; bell time is at 5 p.m. There will be a costume contest at intermission.

Douglas wrestled on two nationally televised wrestling promotions, including the Extreme Championship Wrestling, a popular wrestling circuit in the 1990s. He also wrestled for World Championship Wrestling, which aired on TNT and TBS.

He wrestled nationally with WCW from 1998 until 2001, when WCW was bought out by World Wrestling Entertainment.

Douglas then went on to wrestle for TNA IMPACT, which airs Thursday nights on Spike TV.

Douglas will be taking on a mystery opponent in an open challenge.

There also will be five other action-packed matches from favorites including Mitch Valentine, Shup Shellhammer, Kimmy Shellhammer, Chico Lopez and many more.

Presale general admission tickets cost $8; at the door, general admission tickets cost $10, with $1 off for those in costume.

For children under age 12 and seniors age 55 and over, tickets cost $5.
