LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Sierra Club Lake Group will host Clear Lake Environmental Research Center co-founder and Executive Director Will Evans at its next community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m.

The presentation and discussion will be held via Zoom video conference and live-streamed on Facebook.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required to attend via Zoom.

Founded in 2014, the Clear Lake Environmental Research Center, or CLERC, coordinates projects and programs that focus on solutions to environmental and economic problems both locally and worldwide.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been an incredibly productive year for CLERC and its partners.

In March, CLERC was awarded a $3 million Fire Prevention Grant from Cal Fire for fuel reduction, workforce development and planning future projects.

In July, CLERC opened what is currently the only accredited environmental laboratory in Lake County and began providing analysis services to local water agencies.

Evans will update attendees on these projects plus additional plans CLERC has in store for 2021.

Prior to becoming CLERC’s executive director in 2019, Evans spent nearly a decade employed in various resource management positions with the county of Lake, including deputy director of Water Resources, associate resource planner in the Community Development Department and compliance coordinator for Special Districts. Evans co-founded CLERC as a way to improve the economy and environment in Lake County.

"We hope to have a Facebook moderator who can help with the flow of questions," noted Sierra Club Lake Group Conservation Chair Victoria Brandon, "but it's really best if you can join in via Zoom."

The Sierra Club Lake Group represents more than 400 Sierra Club members living in Lake County and is part of the Redwood Chapter of the Sierra Club that represents the northwest region of California.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Soroptimist International of Clear Lake is continuing its outreach and assistance programs despite COVID-19, and is beginning fundraising for its annual program to offer education grants to women.

With news of the coronavirus pandemic, Soroptimist International of Clear Lake canceled its main fundraiser for the year, the Spring Fling.

A time-honored tradition, the annual event raised funds to support programs to benefit Lake County women, girls and families.

“It was a sad turn of events,” said club President Tina Scott. “We needed the proceeds for our annual Live Your Dreams awards program and needed a new way forward. Thanks to the creativity and determination of our members, we’re getting ready to launch a different type of fundraiser – a wine raffle – just in time for the holidays.”

The club also continued two other important projects, Totes 4 Teens and Sponsoring Survivorship. Recently members joined to make blankets that will go into tote bags for Lake County teens. Despite a tight budget, the club also made their annual $500 contribution to support local breast cancer awareness.

“Now it’s time to kick off our featured – and my favorite – program, Live Your Dream,” Scott said.

This unique program awards education grants to women who are the primary financial support for their families – women who have a dream to pursue a better life. The grants are used to improve their education, skills and employment prospects. The number and amount of the grants depend on the amount of money raised. Last year the total awarded was $5,300.

“Past award recipients have overcome obstacles most of us can’t imagine,” said Kathy Freeborn, past project coordinator and longtime club member. “Escaping poverty, abusive relationships and beating drug addictions, are just a few of the hardships faced. It is heartbreaking to hear the tragedies these women have endured and equally heartwarming to know we are making a difference in their lives and the lives of their children. I always wish we could do more – the need in Lake County is so great.”

“Especially in these particularly challenging economic times, the sentiments expressed by Freeborn resonate with all club members,” Scott said.

Fawn Williams, the organizer of this year’s fundraising event, said, “We’re asking those that can to join us in support of deserving women by purchasing raffle tickets, $25 each or 5 for $100. On December 15 we will draw 4 prizes – from 30 to 5 bottles of amazing Lake County wines.”

MENDOCINO COUNTY, Calif. – The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Mendocino Unit will be conducting an approximately 600-acre broadcast burn this week.

The burn is planned for Wednesday, Nov. 11, through Friday, Nov. 13, weather and air quality conditions permitting.

The prescribed burn area is located south of the community of Yorkville, near Upper Rancheria Creek in the southeastern portion of Mendocino County, south of Highway 128 and north of Cloverdale. Aircraft and smoke will be visible in the area.

The prescribed burning being done under this Vegetation Management Program project will be conducted under specific climatic conditions to ensure control and minimize air quality and other impacts.

The primary goal of this prescribed burn is to reintroduce fire as a natural element of the ecosystem.

A second goal is to improve wildlife habitat by inducing new shoots from sprouting species to increase forage production, with islands of unburned fuel left within the burned area to provide shelter for small mammals.

A third goal is to reduce overall vegetation to decrease the chance of catastrophic wildfires in the future.

The burn will be conducted under very tight restrictions for the personal safety of firefighters and area residents.

If there are any indications that the burn cannot be conducted in a safe manner, such as high winds or local fire activity, the burn will be canceled.

Cal Fire reminds all residents that their safety is of the utmost concern.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around the North Coast during the coming week.

Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.

Caltrans advises motorists to drive with caution when approaching work areas and to be prepared to stop at traffic control stations.

The Caltrans Traffic Operations Office has reviewed each project and determined that individual project delays are expected to be less than the statewide policy maximum of 30 minutes unless noted otherwise.

Highway 29

– PG&E has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for tree work from West Road to Armstrong Road on Monday, Nov. 16. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Highway construction from Spruce Grove Road South to Hofacker Lane will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Highway Construction near the Route 281 junction will continue. One-way traffic controls will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Highway 175

– PG&E has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility work past Wild Cat Road to Private Road on Tuesday, Nov. 17. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– PG&E has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility work from Casa Dicaccia Road to Sunrise Vista Resort on Thursday, Nov. 12. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Highway construction from Putah Creek Bridge to Dry Creek will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

MENDOCINO COUNTY

Highway 1

– Shoulder work from Old State Highway/Mendocino County Line to Mill Street, Point Arena will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

– Striping work from Mill Street. Point Arena to Comptche Ukiah Road will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

– Shoulder work from Pudding Creek to De Haven Creek Road will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

– Emergency work at Blue Slide Gulch will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Bridge work at Soldier Point Viaduct will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 20

– Slide removal two miles west of Three Chop Road will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Landscape work at Road 200A will begin on Monday, Nov. 16. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

– PG&E has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility work from Walnut Street to Hazel Street. Lane closures will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists should anticipate minimal delays.

Highway 101

– Emergency work from Reeves Canyon Road to Ridgewood Ranch Road will continue. Southbound lane closures will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Emergency road repairs due to wildfire from Ryan Creek Road to the entrance to Witra’s Hidden will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

– Emergency work near the Dora Creek Bridge will continue. Southbound lane closures will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate minor traffic delays.

Highway 162

– Bridge work at Bloody Run Creek Bridge will begin Monday, Nov. 16. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Mendocino National Forest lands in Potter Valley, California.

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – All Mendocino National Forest offices (virtual services), including the Chico Seed Orchard, will be closed on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Offices will resume virtual services at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Fire and law enforcement staff will be on duty to provide for public safety; our staffing includes many veterans who have chosen a Forest Service career following their military service. A big thank you to all vets from your friends at the Mendocino National Forest.

Remember that the August Complex fire area closure is still in effect and that Forest Highway 7 is not open to through traffic from Willows to Covelo.
