CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The next monthly meeting of the Children’s Museum of Art and Science will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the Aromas Café on the Yuba College campus in Clearlake.

All meeting are open to the public and anyone interested in helping to provide art and science experiences for the youth of Lake County is invited and encouraged to attend.

Agenda items include planning for the seventh annual art and science camp scheduled for Saturday, May 4.

This camp will take place at Taylor Observatory and the Ely Stage Stop.

In addition to the three hands-on learning stations at each venue, the Redbud Audubon Society is sponsoring a one hour raptor show.

Further discussion of the Lego WeDo robot program also is on the agenda.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Got a Northern California wintertime weather picture to share?

The National Weather Service’s Sacramento office is inviting entries for its winter photo contest.

The agency will then give the Facebook community a chance to vote for the favorites.

They will take the top five photos with the most likes and integrate them into a seasonal banner image at the top of the office’s Facebook page, which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/NWS.Sacramento .

Winning submissions also may be used as a background image in a future weather story. Full attribution will be given.

The rules allow for up to three weather-related photos to be submitted per person. The photos must be of interior Northern California.

All entries must be posted on the agency’s Facebook page by Feb. 1.

Any picture posted to the Facebook wall counts as an entry.

Photos must be the original work of the person submitting them. Include location and date in the description if possible.

NORTH COAST – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around Lake County during the coming week.

Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.
 
LAKE COUNTY

Highway 29

– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Route 281 to Bottle Rock Road through Friday, Jan. 18. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Route 281 to the junction of Routes 29/175 near Kelseyville beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Highway 53

– Pavement repairs from Route 29 to 40th Avenue will continue through Friday, Jan. 18. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Teichert Construction of Davis.

– Highway widening and rehabilitation from 40th Avenue to the junction of Routes 20/53 will continue through Friday, Jan. 18. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Teichert Construction of Davis.

MENDOCINO COUNTY

Highway 1

– PG&E of Ukiah has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility repairs 0.3 mile north of Fish Rock Road on Friday, Jan. 18. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Replacement of the Greenwood Creek Bridge will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five minute delays. Contractor – Golden State Bridge Inc. of Martinez.

– Caltrans will perform slipout repairs 1.6 miles south of Navarro Bluff Road. One-way traffic control with temporary stop signs will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 20

– PG&E of Ukiah has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility repairs from 0.5 mile west of Wildwood Campground to Forestry Station Road through Friday, Jan. 18. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– A pavement repair project from 1.4 miles west of Little Lake Road to Three Chop Road will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Argonaut Constructors of Santa Rosa.

Highway 101

– Caltrans will perform slide repairs near the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge (near Frog Woman Rock). Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

Highway 128

– Metal beam guardrail repair at various locations from Route 1 to Anderson Valley Way will continue Monday, Jan. 21. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Coral Construction of Wilsonville.

Highway 162

– Highway repairs 0.5 mile south of the Corral Creek Bridge will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Wylatti Resource Management Inc. of Covelo.

Highway 253

Route 253 (1.8/15.1) – Metal beam guardrail repair at various locations from Singley Cattlepass to the Robinson Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Coral Construction of Wilsonville.

Work on all these projects is weather permitting and subject to change. Caltrans advises motorists to drive with caution when approaching work areas and to be prepared to stop at traffic control stations.

The Caltrans Traffic Operations Office has reviewed each project and determined that individual project delays are expected to be less than the statewide policy maximum of 30 minutes, unless noted otherwise above.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Sarah Erdreich, Journalist and women’s health advocate, will be Janie Rezner’s first guest on “Women’s Voices” on KZYX on Monday, Jan. 21, beginning at 7 p.m.

They will discuss Erdreich’s new book, “Generation Roe: Inside the Future of the Pro-choice Movement.” It’s a new way of thinking about abortion – one based in the reality of women’s lives.

Janie Rezner’s second guest will be Leslene della Madre, radical feminist, shamanic healer and author of “Midwifing Death: Returning to the Arms of the Ancient Mother.”  

Della Madre writes, “It’s very confusing about what century we are in … it’s 2012, and men are still trying to tell women what to do and what not to do with our bodies. I would like to ask for a worldwide prayer for men to realize that birth control is NOT their issue. What IS their issue is their jealousy/fear of women’s creative power – age old – at least 5,000 years. When men get a grip on their fear, peace will naturally and organically surface. We need to start creating women’s councils around the world to create the world we wish to live in. It most certainly will not include fear mongering men who try to stand on women’s backs every chance they get.”
 
She has just returned from Guatemala with her intent to connect with Mayan women in this time of the new epoch – identified among some as “the new cycle of women.”

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The Middletown Middle School Broncos eighth grade girls basketball team closed the 2012-13 regular season on Thursday with a win over Mountain Vista Middle School of Kelseyville to remain undefeated with a 10-0 record.

This same team also went undefeated in 2011-12 as seventh graders and won the Lake County Championship.

Team members are Abigail Aden, Kaityn Boorn, Caitlin Lemoine, Cassidy McKinney, Kaitlyn Miinch, Kendall Mildenberger, Lyndsy Moore, Makenzi Smith, Alley Tallman and Callie Wilson.

The girls are coached this year by Tamara Slaight and John Davis, assisted by Beth Hall.

Middletown and Kelseyville girls teams have met numerous times since playing as fifth grade All Stars, and every game has been extremely close – generally within five points.

While Kelseyville took the fifth grade crown, Middletown has triumphed in sixth and seventh grades and looks to close out their middle school run next week in the county championships, to be held at Middletown Jan. 23-25.

In volleyball, Aden, Lemoine, McKinney, Mildenberger and Tallman formed the core of the 2012 girls team, which also went undefeated. Both the seventh and eighth grade Broncos teams won their respective championships in 2012.

At the high school level the Middletown girls basketball dynasty seems to holding up.

The Lady Mustang JV team is undefeated so far this season and is well-stocked with freshmen moving up from last years championship eighth grade team.

Coached by Anthony Bazzano and Roxi Hoogendorn, the Mustang JV team traveled to Cloverdale Friday night for what should be a tight match.

COBB, Calif. – The Friends of Boggs Mountain Board of Directors is holding a meeting open to all from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19.

The meeting will take place at the Cobb Area County Water District Office, 16595 Highway 175, No. 102, next to the Cobb Post Office off Highway 175 and the firehouse.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, and provide feedback/comments/concerns to the board. In addition, it will give you some insight on the organization and opportunities to get involved.

The board wants its 2013 programs to be enjoyable, educational and memorable, and would love to hear ideas from the community as well.
