By attending the board of director's meeting once a month, you will help make decisions and suggestions regarding the programs' staffing, fundraising and financial needs. You will get to know the staff and volunteers in the various programs as well as the present board members

Senior Peer Counseling and Friendly Visitors programs have helped hundreds of Lake County seniors and is rapidly expanding.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The city of Lakeport has several commission/committee positions available and is seeking residents interested in applying.

City officials are seeking five members for the Park and Recreation Commission and four members of the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee (one of which is to be filled by a member of the insurance industry).

The Park & Recreation Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Lakeport City Council in matters pertaining to city parks and recreation. It also cooperates with the Lakeport Planning Commission and civic organizations to advance the sound planning of new recreation areas and facilities.

The commission recommends, from time to time, policies on city recreation facilities to the city council for consideration and approval.

The Park & Recreation Commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 4:15 p.m. The terms that are available include three two-year terms and two one-year terms.

The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee is an advisory committee making recommendations to the Lakeport City Council on matters relating to traffic safety, pedestrian safety, and parking, as it relates to traffic safety.

The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. The available terms on this committee are for four years.

Membership on these committees is voluntary.

The Senior Peer Counseling program of Konocti Senior Support Inc. is accepting applications for the spring volunteer training for this enriching opportunity to help seniors talk through a discouraging time, access services, cope with losses and adapt to the challenges of older age.

Volunteers will share their experiences with other inspirational volunteers, engage in lively discussions, and receive weekly training in the gifts and challenges of aging.

Volunteers will learn skills such as compassionate listening, strategic coping and clear communicating.

You will learn the secrets of increasing peace of mind, reducing stress, recovering from a loss, building healthy relationships and exploring the spiritual advantages of later life.

As a volunteer, you will spend a total of about four hours a week with clients and attending a group supervision session in Lakeport or Clearlake.

The group is now accepting a limited number of applications for volunteers throughout Lake County for this free training facilitated by licensed psychotherapist Kim Baughan Young MFT, clinical consultant; which includes experiential practice, movie clips, lively group discussion and even free lunches.

The training will be held on three successive Fridays this spring.

The training will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 5, 21, 19 and 26, at the Lower Lake High School Library, 9430 Lake St.

Participants can improve customer and employee relations learning and practicing dispute resolution in an adult learning environment.

It's also an opportunity to upgrade listening and negotiation skills, and enrich one's personal and professional skills.

Those who complete the training also can become a community or Lake County Superior Court mediator and make a difference in not just their own lives but in the lives of others.

The fee is $250, however a sliding scale is available.

Interviews to qualify for the sliding scale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at 380 N. Main St., Lakeport.
