LAKEPORT – The Lake County Department of Public Works reports that work on the Soda Bay Road/Mission Rancheria Road realignment project has begun.

Beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 4, Mission Rancheria Road will be subject to single-lane controlled traffic between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Up to 15-minute delays can be expected.

Starting Thursday, Aug. 5, Soda Bay Road from Big Valley Road to Stone Drive will be closed to through traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The closure will be in effect through August.

Through traffic will be detoured around Soda Bay Road at Stone Drive and Big Valley.

Local traffic and those traveling to Konocti Vista Casino will be allowed access down Soda Bay Road.

The public is urged to drive with caution in the area.

LAKE COUNTY – Transition Lake County invites interested individuals and families to their get-acquainted barbecue and potluck at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

The gathering will be held in the little park behind the Kelseyville Senior Center on Third Street, just south of Main in Kelseyville.

Bring something to barbecue or your favorite dish to share.

Cool beverages, paper plates and plastic cups also would be very useful.

Transition Lake County is a new, fast-growing group that is allied with the Transition Towns Initiative (TTI).

The TTI is a global grassroots effort whose mission is to help towns all around the world transition from oil dependence to local resilience, to respond to Peak oil and climate change.

TLC’s goal is, let’s prepare now and have fun doing it. Let’s form community. Let’s figure out what we need and how we can meet those needs locally, without depending on big corporations, government or on rapidly diminishing resources. Let’s help each other out – we all have amazing knowledge, experience and gifts to share.

A lot of local folks seem to like these goals, because a lot of people are showing up as this grassroots effort is launched.

Highway 20

– Geotechnical surveys will be performed from Old State Highway Road to Howard Street on Thursday, Aug. 5. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Fugro West, Incorporated, of

– PG&E of Ukiah has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility maintenance 0.8 mile west of Rosemont Drive through Friday, July 30. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– Geotechnical surveys will be performed near Keys Boulevard and from 3.5 miles west of Walker Ridge Road to the Colusa/Lake County line on Monday, August 2. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Fugro West Inc. of Roseville.

Highway 29

– Chip sealing from the Lake/Napa County line to Hidden Valley Road will continue. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – International Surfacing Systems of West

– Paving from the junction of Route 29/175 near Lakeport to Mockingbird Lane will continue. Work hours are 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Ramps at Lakeport Boulevard (Exit 102), 11th Street (Exit 103), Park Way (Exit 106), and Nice-Lucerne Cutoff Road (Exit 108) will be intermittently closed. No more than one onramp and offramp will be closed at a time. Motorists will be advised to use an alternate route and may experience minor delays. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.

Highway 53

Highway 175

Highway 281

Highway 1

– A drainage repair project from 1.4 miles south of Hales Grove to 1.2 mile south of Mill Bank Resort will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Green Right O’Way Constructors of Willits.

Highway 101

– Installation of rock slope protection from Reeves Canyon Road to the Haehl Overhead bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.

– A highway restriping and signing project from Reynolds Highway to 1.2 miles north of Ryan Creek Road will continue through Friday, July 30. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays. – Paving from the Dora Creek Bridge to 0.5 mile north of the Dora Creek Bridge will continue through Friday, July 30. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. – Replacement of the Russian River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. Highway 253

LAKEPORT – Derek Funderburg, Life Scout from Boy Scout Troop 42, is working on his Eagle Project, which is to extend the flags to Lakeport Boulevard and Clear Lake Avenue by adding 45 new flags and poles.

A way in which Troop 42 honors those that protect the rights of citizens and the country is to post 40 flags on Main Street, and they have done this for well over 15 years on six national holidays.

The scope of the project is to drill 45 new holes and put a sleeve and a cap in each hole to accommodate the new flags.

In addition Funderburg is drilling out the old holes to allow for a sleeve and a cap for each hole.

He has already had the older flags cleaned by Lake County Cleaners who cleaned them at no cost as they have historically done for our community.

Funderburg chose this project as he would like to further honor those who serve and have served the country.

More flags will show more patriotism by the city and give his troop more of an opportunity to give back to those that do so much for the country.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $2,000. So far Funderburg has raised a total of $731.

Those that have graciously donated to his project are the Kiwanis, Delta Iota Tau, Skin Fitness, Peter Windrem, Kelly Mather, Piedmont Lumber, Lakeport Main Street Association and Lakeport Tire & Auto Service.

Doug Grider and the city of Lakeport also are providing support in accomplishing this project.

Funderburg’s hope is to have this project completed for posting of 85 flags on Labor Day.

LAKE COUNTY – Lake County Wine Studio is hosting a book signing on this coming Saturday, July 31, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with author Peggie King, who has released her first cookbook, “Fit Food For Foodies.”

The cookbook was inspired by King’s own experiences with eating in a way to cleanse the body of toxins including old stored fat.

The book sells for $29.95 and contains more than 60 fabulous detox diet-friendly recipes with a variety of wonderful food options.

King also teaches a free Healthy Living Class every Monday in Kelseyville to share how easy it is to eat great food and do something great for your body that will move you toward a healthier way of eating.

LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES – Lake and Mendocino County family members who provide direct care to elders, or who are elders caring for adults, don’t have to feel alone in the valuable service they provide.

Redwood Caregiver Resource Center, a program of North Coast Opportunities funded in part by the Area Agency on Aging, helps family members be better care providers while taking care of themselves.

Twice a month, busy men and women caregivers come together in support groups in Clearlake, Lucerne, Upper Lake and Ukiah and discuss their challenges and successes. Tips of the trade, laughter and KIeenex abound.

The agency also offers training workshops, respite,and one-on-one counseling sessions for caregivers who seek guidance outside of a support group setting.

Many individuals first learn about these supports when they call Community Care’s Senior Information & Assistance hotline at 1-800-510-2020.

“A caregiver who is going it alone may call us in times of stress or change to see what supports are out there to help,” said Community Resources Specialist Kathy Johnson.

“We make a point of telling the caller that when a family works with Redwood Caregiver Resource Center, it’s the caregiver who is the ‘client’ – not the care recipient – which can be a surprise to someone whose energies are so devoted to the care needs of another,” she said. “Community Care feels this work is so important that our office is the host site for the Ukiah support group.”
