LAKEPORT, Calif. – Now that we are officially into spring, Branch 168 of the Sons In Retirement (SIR) has a full slate of activities planned for the coming months.

On Thursday, April 11, they will enjoy a “Day at the Races” at Golden Gate Fields. The trip includes bus transportation, a full lunch at the “Turf Club,” admission and program. Spouses and significant others are welcome to join in the fun.

Also in April, SIR will start the golf season off with a scramble played at the Windsor Golf Course on April 10th.  

Two weeks later on April 24, they will play a four man two best ball tournament at the Aetna Springs course.  

Jim Cary, the golf chairman for branch 133 and 168, has organized the schedule for the remainder of the year which includes golf tournaments in Reno June 11-13 and in Monterey Sept. 24-26.

These are in addition to the local tournaments that Cary has scheduled to take place about every two weeks from April through November.

Bob Specht, the travel chair, is working on plans for a trip to Reno in June to see the show “Menopause, The Musical.”

Sons In Retirement is a social organization for men of retirement age who are pursuing the goal of enjoying their later years. It has 142 branches with 18,000 members throughout the state.

Branch 168 holds a luncheon on the second Friday of each month at the Conference room at Konocti Vista Casino.

LUCERNE, Calif. – A caregiver support group for families dealing with memory loss or other cognitive impairments will meet on Thursday, April 4.

The group meets at the First Lutheran Church, 3863 Country Club Drive, across from the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Social worker Jenny Johnson is the facilitator.  

The groups are sponsored by Redwood Caregiver Resource Center (1-800-834-1636) and the Social Day Programs in Lake County.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – On Monday, April 8, the members of the Hidden Valley Lake Garden Club will hold its third annual member garden tour.

This is always a very enjoyable and instructive event. Each of the four gardens on the tour offer a unique approach to the enjoyment of outdoor space.

Garden No. 1: This home is nestled under a heritage oak. The garden, located on a sunny hillside boasts a beautiful stone wall with terraced flower garden. Adjacent to the deck are raised vegetable beds with cold frame option.

Garden No. 2: A shade garden with many mature trees, seating nooks, water features, rambling stone walls and a colorful  array of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees.

Garden No. 3: A member new to the Hidden Valley Lake Community has been busy reclaiming an edible garden lush with fruit trees an avocado and fruiting vines. Charming paths crisscross the garden.

Garden No. 4: Combines a beautifully composed entry garden with a very private backyard deck overflowing with container flowers and shrubs, bonsai plants and living privacy walls.

The club will meet at the Hidden Valley Lake Association administrative building, 18174 Hidden Valley Road, for a coffee social at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 8, to be followed by a brief business meeting.

NICE, Calif. – Nice Mutual Water Co. will hold its annual shareholders meeting on Saturday, June 15.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the water company, 3246 Lakeshore Blvd.

Three director positions are up for election.

If you are interested in running for a director’s position and are a shareholder in the Nice Water District, please submit to the water company a short candidate’s statement by May 17.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Sons of Norway Vikings of Lake Lodge No. 6-166 will hold its next heritage and culture event on Sunday, April 14.

The group will meet at 1 p.m. at the Galilee Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 8860 Soda Bay Road in Kelseyville.

The theme is quilts, led by guest speaker Ellen Aasen, the group’s quilter extraordinaire and treasurer. A DVD will be shown about prairie quilts.

Lake County quilters are invited to come and share this afternoon with the group. Reservations are not necessary.

The meal will include soup, bread and Rommegrøt, a sweet Norwegian porridge.

Cost of the meal will be $6 per person.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The regular meeting of the Clearlake Planning Commission, set for Tuesday, April 2, has been canceled, according to city officials.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the council chambers at Clearlake City Hall, 14050 Olympic Drive.
