LAKE COUNTY

Highway 20

– PG&E of Ukiah has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for an aerial crossing 0.1 mile west of Linden Street on Sunday, Oct. 31. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Intermittent full road closures will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

MENDOCINO COUNTY

Highway 1

– Replacement of signal heads from the junction of Routes 1/20 to Manzanita Street will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Republic ITS of Novato.

Highway 20

– Caltrans will perform culvert repairs from 1.2 miles west of the Broaddus Creek Bridge to 0.5 mile west of Cropley Lane beginning Monday, Nov. 1. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Highway 101

– A metal beam guardrail repair project at various locations from 0.1 mile north of the Mendocino/Sonoma County to the Forsyth Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 5 p.m. Sunday evening through 7 a.m. Friday morning, 24 hours per day. The southbound offramp to Route 222 (Talmage Road Exit 548A) will be intermittently closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. Motorists will be advised to use an alternate route and may experience minor delays. Contractor – Wahlund Construction of Eureka.

– A pavement repair project from the junction of Route 20/101 to Uva Drive will continue. Work hours are 8 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday evening through Friday afternoon. Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Northbound ramps at West Road (Exit 557) will be intermittently closed. Motorists will be advised to use an alternate route and may experience minor delays. Contractor – Granite Construction, Incorporated, of Ukiah.

– A metal beam guardrail repair project at various locations from the Forsyth Creek Bridge. In four-lane sections work hours are 24 hours per day from 5 p.m. Sunday evening through 7 a.m. Friday morning. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel, and motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. In two-lane sections nighttime work hours are 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. One-way traffic control will be in effect, and motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Wahlund Construction of Eureka.

– Installation of rumble strips from 0.5 mile south of Bell Springs Road to 0.6 miles south of Hermitage Vista Point will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Apply-A-Line Inc. of Anderson.

– A metal beam guardrail repair project at various locations from the Rock reek Bridge to the Bridges Creek Bridge will continue. In four-lane sections work hours are 24 hours per day from 5 p.m. Sunday evening through 7 a.m. Friday morning. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel, and motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. In two-lane sections nighttime work hours are 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. One-way traffic control will be in effect, and motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Wahlund Construction of Eureka.

Highway 222

– Replacement of the Russian River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays during work hours and five-minute delays at other times. Contractor – CC Myers of Rancho Cordova.

Anchored by Law Show host Herb Gura, coverage will begin as the polls close and continue into the night until final results are posted.

Gura will offer analysis and political chatter to keep things moving as well as take phone calls from listeners with their comments and opinions.

Other KPFZ programmers will be on hand and also phoning in from candidate’s gatherings, party headquarters and the county elections office as the results present themselves.

Candidates are expected to drop by the KPFZ studios or phone in to chat as they find out their political fates.

The event, which provides a fun and safe way for children to celebrate Halloween, will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the gym at Clear Lake High School, 350 Lange St., Lakeport.

Admission is free.

All children preschool to age 13 and their parents are welcome.

There will be free games, candy and refreshments.

A costume contest at will be held at 7:15 p.m. with prizes for the best costumes.

The haunted house, for children up through age 13, will be open from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

This is a free event but donations are welcome.

“Halloween has always been my favorite day of the year, and obviously became my two sons' favorite day, too. We always went all out with decorating,” said shop owner Jeanne Bower.

She said she realized children on the Northshore needed a place to go that was safe and fun and she decided she should share her favorite day with them.

Bower said she and her staff will be in costume, just as all the trick-or-treaters will be.

She said it is not too fancy or too scary for the little ones, but entertaining and spooky enough for everyone.

In addition, the espresso bar will be open for parents in case they want something warm while out and about with their kids.

While the calendar was produced with Lake County home gardeners in mind, it contains valuable information for all Lake County residents.

This year’s calendar features the “Unmanaged Apple and Pear Tree Outreach Program” (UAPTOP).

This program works to educate home gardeners about the impact their unmanaged apple or pear trees can have on nearby commercial pear orchards by increasing the amount of pesticide needed to combat higher pest pressure.

This would reverse the tremendous gains local growers have made in reducing the need to spray. UAPTOP encourages removal or proper management of apple and pear trees and offers ideas for replacing them with other ornamental and edible trees.

The calendar also includes the popular month-by-month gardening guide contained in past issues, as well as recipes for local produce.

Besides UAPTOP, all information in this beautifully-illustrated Master Gardener calendar has been written with Lake County growing conditions in mind, which makes it a unique, as well as useful gift for local home gardeners and others wishing to learn more about Lake County agriculture and gardening.
