LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport Rotary Club will host its 89th annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 20.

The free event will take place rain or shine at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 401 Martin St. in Lakeport.

Gates open at 1:15 p.m., with the hunt beginning at 1:30 p.m.

There will be three age groups for children ages birth to 12 years.

The Lake County Amateur Radio Society will be hosting an operations day in Lucerne May 3.

The event will be held Saturday May 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lucerne Community Church in the Fellowship Hall located at 5870 East Highway 20 in Lucerne.

Ham Radio Operations day is designed to assist HAM operators and the general public to learn more about HAM radio operation.

The group invites people who are already Ham Radio Operators as well as those who are considering Ham or would like to learn more.

It is open to all levels of Ham Radio operators, licensed or not.

People with questions about or issues with their radios should bring their radio and manual to the event to receive expert assistance.

A raffle for a handheld Ham radio will be held.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Sons In Retirement group held its monthly luncheon meeting at Konocti Visa Casino on Friday, April 11.

The meeting opened with Larry Powers, chair of the membership committee, introducing three new members.  

The special guest speaker was Richard Ford, who currently is the county's assistant auditor-controller and is running for the assessor-recorder’s position, which became open when Doug Wacker announced his plans to retire.

Ford explained that the assessor evaluates the property then the auditor determines the tax and returns the file to the assessor-recorder’s office for processing.

Ford pointed out that 20 to 30 percent of the tax is allocated to the general fund and is used to maintain roads and bridges.

He also presented information on homeowner exemptions and some of the challenges the new assessor-recorder will face in this very important position.

In the earlier meeting of the board, Jim Cary, chair of the golf committee for both Branch 133 and 168, reported that the first event of the season held at Hidden Valley Lake was a big success with 60 golfers competing. Cary also reported that the next event at Aetna Springs already is sold out.

Travel Chair Bob Specht reported that he had to cancel the trip to see “Whickered” as the cost was prohibitive.

Sprecht went on to report that he had arranged for a bus trip to Reno to coincide with the golf tournament. It includes round trip transportation, two nights stay and the dinner show at the Eldorado.

Golfers can sign up for the dinner show for $44 per person.

Sons In Retirement is a social organization for men of retirement age who are pursuing the goal of enjoying their later years. It has 142 branches with 18,000 members throughout the state.

Branch 168 holds a luncheon on the second Friday of each month at the conference room at Konocti Vista Casino.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Hospice Services of Lake County is presenting a volunteer orientation on Wednesday, April 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

For those interested in becoming patient support or bereavement volunteers free training workshops will follow on two successive Saturdays, April 26 and May 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The training program provides the new volunteers with knowledge and skills for visiting patients in hospice care and offering bereavement support to loved ones.

Materials and luncheon will be provided during the Saturday trainings.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Time Bank of Thrive Lake County reached its 400th member on Sunday, April 13, 2014.

“It’s taken us less than nine months to go from 300 to 400 members,” said John Saare, North Lake and technical coordinator for the Time Bank of Thrive Lake County. “Time Banking is starting to really become an alternative currency in this county, as it already is in many other parts of the country and abroad.”

Carol Cole-Lewis, Thrive Lake County coordinator and Time Bank project coordinator, explained why this number is so important.

“We have met a critical mass where the momentum we’ve established can sustain itself,” she said. “This gives us the energy we need to being work on an exciting project that uses time bankers to support the effort of local farmers in order to make local food more affordable to our community. ”

Time Banking is a community currency based on hours where members exchange time instead of cash. Every person’s hour is equal without regard to the service provided.

The Time Bank is open to any Lake County resident, business or organization.

The next free meetup for new and prospective members is on Saturday, May 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Clearlake Youth Center at 4750 Golf Ave., Clearlake. A social event will follow the meetup.

The Time Bank Lakeport office on 307 N. Main St. is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The Clearlake office at the Clearlake Food Pantry, 14832 Lakeshore in Clearlake, is open 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays.
