NICE, Calif. – Come enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner and dance Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Sons of Italy.


The club will be serving slow roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, dressing, vegies, rolls, cranberry and pumpkin pie.


The bar is open for socializing at 5 p.m. then dinner will be served at 6 p.m.


Enjoy dancing to music of the High Notes right after the meal.

NORTH COAST – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around Lake County during the coming week.


Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.


LAKE COUNTY


Highway 20


– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance near Paradise Cove on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.


– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance near Sulfur Bank Drive on Monday, Nov. 14. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.


– A pavement repair project from the junction of Routes 20/53 to the North Fork Cache Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Argonaut Constructors of Santa Rosa.


Highway 29


– A pavement repair project from the Lake/Napa County line to Spruce Grove Road will continue. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.


Highway 53


– Preston Pipeline Inc. of Sacramento has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility work at Old Highway 53 beginning Monday, Nov. 14. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


– Highway widening from 40th Avenue to the junction of Routes 20/53 will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Sierra Equipment Rental of Glenn.


Highway 175


– A pavement repair project from the Lake/Mendocino County line to the junction of Routes 29/175 in Middletown will continue. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.


MENDOCINO COUNTY


Highway 1


– John Robertson of Gualala has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility repairs near Philo Greenwood Road beginning Monday, November 14. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.


– Philip and Lynn Wright of Windsor have been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for repairs to a road approach 0.3 mile north of Navarro Ridge Road. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute


– Storm damage repairs near the Union Landing Viaduct will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Valentine Corporation of San Rafael.


Highway 101


– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Comminsky Station Road to the Pieta Creek Bridge beginning Monday, Nov. 14. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


– Installation of cable median barrier from the El Roble Overcrossing to the junction of Routes 20/101 will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Ghilotti Brothers of San Rafael.


– Construction of retaining walls from Bell Springs Road to 0.7 mile south of the Cummins Road Undercrossing will continue. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – J F Shea Construction Inc. of Redding.


– PG&E of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility repairs 1.5 miles south of the Dora Creek Bridge beginning Thursday, Nov. 17. Work hours are 9 a.m. to noon,weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.


– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Confusion Hill to the Humboldt/Mendocino County line. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


Highway 222


– Replacement of the Russian River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays during work hours and five-minute delays at other times. Contractor – CC Myers of Rancho Cordova.


Highway 271


– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Bear Pen Road to the Humboldt/Mendocino County line. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.


Work on all projects is weather permitting and subject to change. Caltrans wishes to advise motorists to drive with caution when approaching work areas and to be prepared to stop at traffic control stations.


The Caltrans Traffic Operations Office has reviewed each project and determined that individual project delays are expected to be less than the statewide policy maximum of 30 minutes, unless noted otherwise above.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – “Womens Voices” on KZYX will host Mary Beth Brangen and her partner, James Heddle, on Monday, Nov. 14.


The show airs from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and can be heard on www.kzyx.com, and is hosted by Janie Rezner.


Brangen and Heddle co-direct the Ecological Options Network, www.eon3.net, a nonprofit media service for progressive organizations and campaigns.


Their videos have been broadcast internationally, on PBS, Link TV and Free Speech TV, and screened in the US Congress, many Parliaments and at the United Nations, as well as used by activists worldwide.


EON collaborations include the international Nuclear Free Zone; stopping electromagnetic pollution from wireless technologies; stopping proposed radioactive waste dumps in California and Texas; as well as California's Community Choice Energy, the Election Protection and the Stop the Pesticide Spray campaigns.

 

By broadcast time they will just have returned from a three-day public conference and strategy meeting on the great emerging issues of the Asia-Pacific Region, and their effects on island nations of the Pacific, and countries of the Pacific Rim.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Twin Pine Casino & Hotel is having a promotion to help families in need throughout the Lake County area.


Twin Pine is offering $5 in free play for patrons who bring in three nonperishable food items during the month of November. One free play per person, per day.


All canned and dried food items collected will be donated to the Spirit of the Season.


Last year the casino collected more than 8,000 canned and dried food items.


“We are happy to be a part of this community effort to help the needy and be able to participate in such a worthwhile cause,” said Tribal Council Chairman Carl Rivera of the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians, which owns and operates the Casino.

Twin Pine Casino & Hotel is also celebrating the holidays with a Holiday Faire at the casino on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.


The holiday faire is free to attend and will feature a wide assortment of holiday themed gift items. The event provides a perfect opportunity to get into the holiday spirit and also to support local vendors and artisans throughout the area. Get your Christmas shopping done early.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Margaret Thomas Connor, resident at Orchard Park, a senior living community in Clearlake, Calif., has won a national art contest held for the 500,500 Emeritus Senior Living residents around the country.


More than 250 Emeritus residents entered the contest by submitting a winter-themed piece of art created in any medium.


Through a public Facebook contest, Connor’s painting was chosen among the five that are being featured on the company’s holiday cards.


“We are astounded by Margaret’s talent and creativity, and we are thrilled that her work was chosen for the Emeritus card,” said Denise Frane, executive director at Orchard Park. “Margaret is a treasured member of the community. Not only is she a talented painter, Margaret is also an accomplished organist and singer. We are very proud of her.”

Margaret Thomas Connor was born in Canon City, Colorado, and moved to Southern California at the age of 2.


She met and married her husband of 52 years, Charles Connor, while working at Pacific Aeromotive as a "Rosie the Riveter" during World War II. They raised two daughters, and settled in Glendora, Calif.


Connor was a very active member of the Lake County Historical Society, and the co-founder of the Lake County Redbud Audubon Society, which she started in her living room. She started painting in the 1970s and did so for many years.

LUCERNE, Calif. – The Lake County Historical Society will enjoy its annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center at 3985 Country Club Drive on Sunday, Nov. 20.


Doors open at 12:30 p.m., with food served at 1:30 p.m.


Join the group and relax and enjoy a full course turkey dinner. The price is more than reasonable: members, $12, and guests, $15. It would be hard to match that price even if you cooked it yourself, and if you join us you will also enjoy good friends and a great talk. Plus, you won’t have any dishes to wash at the end.


The speaker will be Anita Crabtree of the Lake County Genealogical Society. She will tell the fascinating story of “The connection between Lake County and Daytona Beach, Florida.”


Reservations will be needed so the center has enough food.


To get to the center: Going east on Highway 20 turn left on Ninth Street, go to Country Club Drive; the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center is on 10th and Country Club Drive. Going west on Highway 20 turn right on 10th Street and go to Country Club.
