UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Lake County Wine Studio (LCWS) is hosting a wine tasting event featuring new wine releases from Obsidian Ridge, and artist Renee Geare on Friday, Dec. 2, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 3, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The musical guest on Dec. 2 will be Clovice Lewis performing selections of J.S. Bach accompaniment suites for cello, as well as Lewis’ own music. Lewis is a composer and teacher, and plays with the Ukiah and Lake County symphonies.

Musical guest on Dec. 3 will be Carey Robinson on acoustic guitar. Robinson’s talent on guitar is popular in Lake County and beyond, with a repertoire that spans multiple genre.

At 2,640 feet, Obsidian Ridge is one of the highest sites in the heralded Mayacamas Mountains. Elevation means thinner air with less humidity. Heat builds slowly in the day and dissipates quickly in the evening, creating large temperature differentials. This “diurnal swing” preserves acidity and fixes color.

Elevation means brighter light. For every 1,000-foot rise in elevation, ultraviolet light intensity increases some 3 percent. The grape skin thickens in response, protecting its seed. The key components of color, aroma and flavor are derived from the skin.

The increased light intensity also triggers the maturation of seeds and tannins, ensuring the ripeness of these components at harvest. Only 3 percent of California’s vineyards are situated above 1,000 feet and enjoy an exceptional balance of ripening sun, providing lushness in the resulting wine, with cooling that helps maintain the wine’s acidity, structure and vibrancy.

The two reception evenings at LCWS will offer guests the opportunity to experience the 2009 releases of Obsidian Ridge Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the 2009 releases from Molnar Family.

The $10 wine sampler with paired appetizers designed by Chef Nicholas will feature 2009 Molnar Family Chardonnay paired with Marcona almond and honey-topped Humboldt Fog, 2009 Molnar Family Pinot Noir with a mushroom pâté on crostini, 2009 Obsidian Ridge Syrah with sweet potato pancake with berries, and 2009 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon with tobacco-smoked duck and kalamata olive with tapenade.

Renee Geare is the artist on display for the months of December 2011 and January 2012.

Geare was raised in Michigan and participated in every craft class available to her as a child. Her father was an artist, and he taught Geare and her sister the basics that he had learned in art school: pottery, calligraphy, oil and water color, block printing, sculpting and more.

Geare move to California in 1991 and to Arcadia in 2002 when she married her husband, Joe. Her mother-in-law brought home “fantastic” paintings from her senior community center art classes, which inspired Geare anew, and one day the two women sat down at the kitchen table and Joe’s mother gave Geare her first lesson in oil, as an adult. From that moment on, Geare could not stop painting and within a year, had a painting installed at the Naval Historical Museum and her husband facilitated her first solo art exhibit. Geare reflects that she was very fortunate those first years to study with artists Raphael Maniago and Junn Roca.

Fostering a creative family, the Geare homestead is a ongoing art project; their daughters are involved in designing and making jewelry, painting, sculpting and making pottery. They also create 2D and 3D computer images and are beginning to do some storyboarding.

Since the time of her first showing of paintings from her "100 Views of Mount Konocti" series at LCWS in 2008, Geare has been very busy adding to the series and creating other works, such as stained glass art and murals. Geare offers custom murals on a commission basis - a 4x8 example will be on view at the Studio during the 2-month long show. The show will also introduce Aubrey Geare’s first line of fashion jewelry.

Information will be on site for the Akolouthia Institute, an educational program developed by Geare and Clovis Lewis this past year, which offers instructional classes in 3D design and animation using Blender (a film industry quality software), “Programming for the rest of us,” (using LiveCode), and social media and marketing taught by Carol Cole-Lewis.

The reception evening will also introduce jewelry design artist Aubrey Geare's first line of fashion jewelry available for sale.

In honor of the holiday season, the group offered this special poem:

Twas two weeks before Christmas, when checking each trail,

Not a rider was working, so decided to (e)mail

To all riders and hikers and make them aware,

In hopes that more workers soon would be there.

Their horses were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of clear trails danced in their heads.

These riders and hikers all thought perhaps

Those wonderful, clear trails just happen like that!

They spoke not a word but went straight to their work,

And cleared all the trails, then turned for a look.

And we heard them exclaim, “way to go, man, out’a sight!”

“Happy Trails to all, and to all a good night!”

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – World AIDS Day will be commemorated in Lake County with a special service on the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 1.

The AIDS Celebration of Life Remembrance service will take place at 4 p.m. at Clearlake Oaks Community Methodist Church on The Plaza.

Join the commemoration in the spirit of community. There will be opportunities to get valuable information and to personally honor those who have gone before.

You are welcomed to bring photographs, mementos and stories, ask questions, or to be in silent meditation. Everyone is welcome.

This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths.”

This year’s World AIDS Day is anticipated to see renewed activism as Dec. 1 falls only six months before the International AIDS Conference takes place in Washington, D.C.

World AIDS Day is the moment of the year when millions of people come together across the globe to commemorate people who lost their lives to HIV, applaud progress made in responding to the epidemic and recommit to ending the epidemic.

Last year’s Challenge Day at a local high school was attended by 100 students who were asked to imagine a line in the room. Those youth whose lives have been impacted by HIV were asked to cross the line, or remain if not affected. Eighty percent of the Lake County youth crossed the line.

There is still a lot of work to do, especially for youth and all our citizens. We can do things like having HIV discussions in our schools, attending the Community Care HIV/AIDS Program's annual AIDSWalk and other local events such as World AIDS Day.

Please contact Community Care HIV/AIDS Program 707-995-1606 for more information.
