CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Soroptimist International of Clearlake recently inducted four new members at a program meeting at Howard’s Grotto in Clearlake.

The group holds its meetings twice monthly at Howard’s Grotto – a business meeting on the second Thursday of each month and a program meeting with a speaker on the fourth Thursday.

The group’s next board meeting is Thursday, Aug. 9, at noon at Howard’s Grotto. Lunch is $12; all interested women are invited to attend.

Soroptimist is a term that means “Best For Women.”

The objective of the group is to promote the advancement of women through volunteer service to the community, and to serve as a global voice on issues of importance to women.  

There are three classes of membership: regular, retired/unemployed and embarking.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Put on your sparkle and come out to the party.

Lake County Jazzercise is hosting a Girls Night Out called “Dancing with the Divas” benefiting the new emergency department at St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake.  

The party begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Armstrong Hall, 15642 Armstrong St, two blocks behind the post office in Middletown.  

The cost is $20 per person with all proceeds going to the campaign for the new emergency room.

“I am really excited about this opportunity to benefit our community,” said Jazzercise center owner Beth Rudiger. “We have put together a class featuring songs of the biggest female singers in pop: Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera and many others. With six certified instructors on stage leading the party in diva costume and props for all, it’s going to be high energy and a lot of fun.”

The Lake County Jazzercise Dancers will get the party started with a special performance under the disco ball.

Several local businesses are donating their services to make the night special.

A reception featuring local beverages, appetizers by Chic Le Chef, and desserts by Amanda Breeden of Down Home Creations will follow the class.  

Dress to the nines as prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed participants and for guessing the names of the divas.

Decorations will include floral arrangements by Middletown Florist and Gifts.

Lee Loban, development office assistant and volunteer coordinator for St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake, will participate in the class and answer questions about the new emergency room project.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The next HazMobile event will be held Friday, Aug. 17, and Saturday, Aug. 18, at Kelseyville Lumber, 3555 N. Main St., Kelseyville.

Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Households can bring up to 15 gallons of toxic items free of charge. Fees will be charged for amounts over 15 gallons.

Items that are accepted include paint, solvents, fuels, five-gallon propane tanks, pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, fluorescent light tubes (up to 60 linear feet) and other toxic materials that cannot be put in the trash.

Items that cannot be accepted include televisions, computer monitors, ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials or infectious wastes.

HazMobile services are provided to residential households by the Integrated Waste Management Division of the Lake County Public Services Department and the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

Businesses also are welcome to use this convenient service to properly dispose of hazardous waste and protect our environment, however, businesses must pay for this taxpayer-funded service and first make an appointment.

Free recycling options for residents and businesses:

• Recycled paint is available to both residents and businesses at Lake County Waste Solutions on first-come, first-served basis in five gallon containers. Colors include tan, brown, gray, and pink.
• Used cooking oil can be dropped-off by businesses and residents, which will be recycled into BioDiesel by Yokayo BioFuels. Drop-off at Lake County Waste Solutions, South Lake Refuse & Recycling Center, and the Northshore Fire Protection District station at 6257 Seventh Ave. in Lucerne.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Operation Tango Mike has partnered with Operation Homefront and is offering free back to school supplies to military families.

Operation Tango Mike founder Ginny Craven will host a “shopping spree” at the Operation Tango Mike headquarters at Umpqua Bank, 805 11th St., Lakeport on Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Supplies are free to military families, including children, college students and enrolled adults.

If you are unable to collect your supplies on Tuesday, please call Craven at 707-349-2838 to make arrangements for another pickup time.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport Senior Activity Center’s board of directors, volunteers and participants finished a successful fundraising drive for Operation Tango Mike.

The volunteers and seniors of the community recognized how big of an impact OTM makes in the lives of local families and their deployed family members and wanted to help.

After discussing with Ginny Craven the needs of OTM, the decision was made to hold a fundraiser and collect supplies during the month of July.

The center’s thrift store in downtown Lakeport held a 50 percent off day July 27 and split the proceeds with OTM.

Combined with the day’s sales and many generous contributions from the community, the Meals on Wheels Thrift Store was able to meet their goal of $1,395.

The goal was set to cover the costs of sending 100 care packages to troops overseas.

The Meals on Wheels Thrift Store is located at 120 N. Main St. in Lakeport and can be contacted at 707-263-6174.

The thrift store helps fund over 55,000 meals per year to seniors in the community.

They are always looking for volunteers, accepting donations and pickups can be arranged for items that don’t fit in the car.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Star Chapter 442 will hold its next ride on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Meet at Hillside Yamaha and Honda at 460 S. Main St. in Lakeport, 460 S. Main St., at 9 a.m. Kickstands go up at 10 a.m.

The group will be going to the coast again but a different direction from the last ride. This time members will go over Highway 175/Hopland to Highway 101, then take River Road to Highway 1 to Bodega Bay and have some lunch.

Riders will come back on River Road but we will not come back via Highway 101, instead continuing on to Calistoga and returning to Lake County over Mount St Helena.
