LOWER LAKE, Calif. – A variety of students at Lower Lake High School will be better off thanks to people with classic cars.

The Clearlake Car Club’s Hot August Days car show takes over Main Street Lower Lake on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with vehicle arrivals scheduled between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Featuring more than 100 vintage automobiles from all over, this annual show is the largest fundraiser for the Clearlake Car Club, which uses the funds to benefit the Lower Lake High School auto shop program.

The annual gathering is open to all vehicles built before 1973, and highlights vehicular Americana and the talents of restoration and craftsmanship of hot rodding.

Music fills the air while and the club requests donations for the school. There will be opportunities for pictures with local pin-up girls and Budweiser girls.

The Lakeshore Lions Club will have its beer trailer and Lower Lake Community Action Group will provide a variety of food items whose purchase also benefits the school. Vendors will also be on hand for shopping fun. Finally, tours of world-famous Konocti Rods and Restorations show what can be done with vintage vehicles from full restorations to creative customization.

Eighteen awards will be judged by the awards’ sponsor. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the trophies happening at 1:30 p.m.

With help from this show, the Lower Lake Community Action Group (LLCAG) gave out $6,000 to four students in 2012 and $7,500 to seven students in 2013. The scholarships help a variety of students including students in the auto shop program.

“Lower Lake High School instructor Bill Gabe has helped to create an auto shop program that replicates those in car dealerships,” said Clearlake Car Club President Joe Colabella. “This program gives students a pathway to a career in the automotive field right out of high school.”

Donations from the show go directly to the scholarship fund and have already helped guide a graduating student into this field.

Information about the show including participant applications, maps and more can be had via the No Name Car Club Web site at http://www.clearlakecarclub.com .

This past year has been a busy one for CMAS!

Volunteers conducted weekly sessions using Lego robot kits with  students in the after school program at Upper Lake Elementary.

CMAS has now purchased additional laptops so that we can offer robot sessions for 32 students at a time. They will be available to after school programs county-wide in the 2013-2014 school year.

CMAS sponsored and helped to organize the new Lake County Rocket Club. The Rocket Club met weekly at Taylor Observatory under the guidance of retired teacher Bill Bordisso, and will continue in the fall.

In May, CMAS also partnered with the Lake County Office of Education, the Lake County Historical Society and the Redbud Audubon Society to put on the seventh annual art and science camp.

The camp was held at Taylor Observatory and the Ely Stage Stop. A highlight of the day was a raptor show sponsored by the Audubon Society.

CMAS is a volunteer nonprofit dedicated to providing art and science experiences for Lake County youth. All events and activities are always free of charge to students. CMAS greatly appreciates the support of businesses, service groups, and individuals whose donations make our efforts possible.
