LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport Senior Activity Center's Hot August Nites is looking for local amateur celebrity impersonators to go “back to the 50s” for this summer fundraiser.

All 1950s personalities are fair game, such as James Dean, Ed Sullivan, Wolf Man Jack, Brenda Lee, Ricky Arnaz and Lucille Ball, or Lawrence Welk – anyone prominent in the 1950s.

“Don’t let this chance pass you by,” said Pat Skoog, chair of the event's impersonators committee.

“Let your inner Elvis or Marilyn out and have fun for a good cause,” added center Director Jonathan Crooks.

Tryouts will be Monday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lakeport Senior Activity Center, 527 Konocti Avenue in Lakeport.

All contestants must be in costume and bring their own music on CD. The center will provide a CD player.

There will be three winners, who have the option to perform/lip sync on stage for the Hot August Nites dinner-dance in August.

All contestants will be invited to come in costume to the August event and join in the fun.

“Bring your own rooting section and stay to enjoy a delicious 50s root beer float while the judging takes place,” said Skoog.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Library Literacy Program recently held a volunteer tutor training.

People completing the training will be helping others in Lake County change their lives by improving their reading and writing skills.

LUCERNE, Calif. – Lucerne Friends of Locally Owned Water – or FLOW – will hold a meeting on Saturday, May 17.

The group will meet beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, located at 10th and Country Club.

The primary topic will be getting information for a feasibility study for the formation of a new water district.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Registrar of Voters Office needs poll workers to work on Tuesday, June 3, during the primary election.

The agency reported that there is a shortage of poll workers in some areas of Lake County.

Registered voters who are interested in this important work are encouraged to apply at the Lake County Registrar of Voters Office, located in Room 209 on the second floor of the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes St. in Lakeport, or phone 707-263-2372 for information.

The Registrar of Voters is trying to build a permanent corps of polling officials. Anyone who is interested in community service and has the time to serve as a poll worker is urged to apply.

The workday is from 6 a.m. to about 10 p.m., with breaks for lunch and dinner.

Each poll worker is asked to attend a special class of instruction for election officers prior to each election.
