Community

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Hunger Task Force invites the community to its inaugural annual meeting, to be held on Saturday, May 31, at Lakeside County Park.

The event is a potluck, with beverages provided, to be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The task force was formed in 2001, and has been meeting monthly since that time.

In 2013 it decided to ensure its future, so a 501(c)3 application was submitted and approved, forming a legal nonprofit organization.

As part of that status, an annual meeting is required, so this will be the first.

The task force maintains community gardens where the food grown is given to the local senior centers and food pantries. All who work in the gardens are allowed to take food for their own use.

They also give canning lessons in the fall, to keep food that has been grown from going to waste. They provide labor for two food pantries giving out food.

The group staffs a table at the farmers market once a month to provide information about food resources throughout Lake County.

Any interested person is invited to join us in any of the above activities.

If you would like to attend the potluck, please call Lorrie Gray at 707-277-9227 for more information.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – On Saturday, May 31, approximately 50 vintage wooden boats from around Northern California will gather at the Konocti Vista Casino Marina in Lakeport for the 16th annual Wood & Glory boat and car show.

The boats will parade into the Konocti Vista Casino Marina – located at 2755 Mission Rancheria Road – from the Clear Lake Vista Resort in Soda Bay at approximately 11 a.m. and be on display to the public until 2 p.m. at no charge.

The local Sea Scouts will be at the marina selling water to the visitors.

Wood & Glory is an annual gathering of antique and classic wooden boats on Clear Lake.

The event is one of several held each year throughout the state by the Northern California-Lake Tahoe chapter of the Antique and Classic boat society (A.C.B.S.), a national organization.

This year’s event has a great mixture of not only vintage watercraft, but also fabulous classic cars and a chance to support several worthy local groups.

Held in conjunction with the wooden boat show, the No Name Car Club will have more than 70 cars and hot rods on display in the Konocti Vista Casino parking lot.

Donations will be accepted by the No Name Car Club with the funds going to the Kelseyville High School Ag program. The cars will be available for viewing from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Stop by early and get a tasty pancake at the Operation Tango Mike Pancake Breakfast inside the casino in the banquet room.

The $5 pancake breakfast will be held from 7 to 11 a.m., with all the proceeds going Operation Tango Mike and supporting our overseas soldiers.

Entry to see the cars and boats is at no charge to the public.

Wood & Glory is presented by Konocti Vista Casino and sponsored by Braito's Marina, Riviera Foods, Maheraja Water Skis, Wildhurst Vinyards, Chacewater Winery and Hillside Honda .

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Lake County has a new museum highlighting the history of the areas south of Clear Lake.

Gibson Museum & Cultural Center, at 21267 Calistoga St., faces the new Middletown Community Center and Middletown Square across Highway 29, which runs from Calistoga through Middletown to Clear Lake.

The Gibson building itself first opened as the Gibson Library in 1930 and reopened on May 3.

“Among the exhibits featured initially are area geology and archeology, as well as artifacts recalling the native population and the character of early settlers and development,” said Voris Brumfield, president of the Lake County Historical Society and coordinator of the Gibson Museum Volunteer/ Guides.

“Displays include implements of the quicksilver mines and mementos of the hot springs resorts that spurred the growth of South Lake County in the 1800s and into the mid-20th century. Once numbering more than 30, only a fraction of original resorts remain open to the public,” Brumfield said.

The Gibson Museum & Cultural Center is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 6 p.m.

Like the Ely Stage Stop & Country Museum on Soda Bay Road in Kelseyville, the Gibson Museum was created in cooperation with the county of Lake, owners of the structures and land, and the Lake County Historical Society.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Arts Council’s Main Street Gallery’s Bazaar on Saturday, May 10, was anything but bizarre, but it was delightful as shoppers milled around the 23 vendors displaying their talents in art, jewelry, wearable art, gourds and “found objects” on the lawn space between the Lakeport Yacht Club and beautiful Clear Lake.

The council thanked the Yacht Club for generously donating use of its building for the gallery’s event, which raised funds for the Gallery’s Summer Youth Art Camp.

The gallery also appreciated the support of the Grocery Outlet, Suzie Q’s donuts and the Lakeport Fire Department in recognizing the value of adding art to the lives of our youth.

This will be the third year that art classes, in a variety of mediums, will be held at the Gallery beginning in June.

Visit www.lakecountyartscouncil.com for more information and a listing of classes.

The Spring Bazaar would not have been a success without the hard work of gallery members who contributed time and effort to make this an enjoyable day for shoppers and vendors.

Adding to the day, were the delightful sounds from the talented Travis Rinker on acoustic guitar. Jim Williams and Alex followed with their oldies and goodies dancing music, and Stephan Holland rounded out the day with his own special and engaging style on guitar.

The Main Street Gallery is located at 325 N. Main St. in Lakeport, telephone 707-263-6658.
