CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Friends and supporters of the Children’s Museum of Art and Science (CMAS) were treated to a fantastic meal and great service by the students of the Yuba College Culinary Arts Program at the Aromas Café on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Guests also were delighted with the musical entertainment provided by talented local musicians Doug and Sissa Harris, Scott Sommers and Bill Bordisso.

Sarah Fred sold raffle tickets for chances on a wide variety of interesting raffle baskets and other donated items. The two hours of backhoe time donated by Case Excavating and the baby quilt made by Lela Prather were just two of the hotly contested items.

CMAS would like to thank all those who bought tickets, made donations and helped to support this fundraising effort.

It would not be possible for CMAS to fulfill its mission of providing free art and science experiences for Lake County youth without the continuing support of the community.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The first Sierra Club Lake Group general meeting of the fall season will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The group will meet in the Round Room at Mendocino College, 1005 Parallel Drive, Lakeport.

The meeting will feature a presentation by Cow Mountain conservationist Jared Hendricks on the Hendricks Ranch Environmental Restoration Project, which he describes as “an integrative combination of wildlife habitat, fire ecology and wilderness watersource restoration.”

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – For the fourth and final “Kickin’ in the Country” street dance, the Kelseyville Business Association (KBA) welcomes back the C.A.M. Band Thursday, Sept. 19.

The dance will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Main Street in Kelseyville.

The C.A.M. is short for Cobb Area Musicians, as all members are from Cobb Mountain and have thrilled Northern California crowds for seven years.

In the summer of 2006, the band officially formed an acoustic trio by the founding members, Danny Prather, guitarist, singer and song writer; John Gormley, bassist and vocal; and Eric Patrick, rhythm guitar and vocalist.

“We have been crossing paths musically for years,” said Prather.

Later keyboard player Tom Cramton and drummer Mike Elliott joined to create a high energy rock and roll band with beautiful harmonies and tight melodies.

They play a blend of classic rock, country, hits from the 1950s and 1960s, soul, blues and new music.

“There should be something for everyone when C.A.M. Band plays,” said Patrick.

The sponsors are the Brick Tavern and Lake Parts/NAPA Auto Parts.

The KBA will be serving ice cold beer and wine highlighting Chacewater Wine and Olive Mill.

Come by the KBA booth and enjoy the wine selection.

There will be snow cones and a raffle with prizes.

The Kelseyville Food Pantry will be collecting nonperishable food donations, and KBA will give a free raffle ticket per person for any food donations.

LUCERNE, Calif. – The next HazMobile event will be held Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, at Lucerne Harbor County Park, 6225 E. Highway 20.

Hours will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Households can bring up to 15 gallons of toxic items free of charge.

Fees will be charged for amounts over 15 gallons.

Items that are accepted include paint, solvents, fuels, five-gallon propane tanks, pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, fluorescent light tubes (up to 60 linear feet), and other toxic materials that cannot be put in the trash.

Items that cannot be accepted include televisions, computer monitors, ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials or infectious wastes.

HazMobile services are provided to residential households by the Integrated Waste Management Division of the Lake County Public Services Department and the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

Businesses also are welcome to use this convenient service to properly dispose of hazardous waste and protect our environment, however, businesses must pay for this taxpayer-funded service and first make an appointment.

Business appointments can be made by calling the Mendocino County Solid Waste Authority, the contracted agency that provides this service in Lake County at 707-468-9786.

Free recycling options for residents and businesses:

• Recycled paint is available to both residents and businesses at Lake County Waste Solutions on first-come, first-served basis in five gallon containers. Colors include tan, brown, gray and pink.
• Used cooking oil can be dropped-off by businesses and residents, which will be recycled into BioDiesel by Yokayo BioFuels. Drop-off at Lake County Waste Solutions, South Lake Refuse & Recycling Center, and the Northshore Fire Protection District station at 6257 Seventh Ave. in Lucerne.
• Used motor oil can be dropped-off by residents for recycling year round at a number of sites in the county. Visit www.recycling.co.lake.ca.us for locations.
• Electronics (E-waste) can be dropped-off at Lake County Waste Solutions, South Lake Refuse & Recycling Center, and monthly at the Goodwill E-Waste collection held in Lakeport.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Lake County Mediations is announcing the scheduling of its basic mediation training for 2013.

The training consists of 32 hours of classroom instruction over five sessions.

A certificate of completion will be awarded to the participants who complete all of the classes. Twenty-eight hours of MCLE credit is available for legal professionals.

Classes will be held at the United Methodist Church, First and Main streets, Kelseyville, on the following dates and times: All day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following Saturdays – Oct. 5, 12 and 26; and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and Friday, Oct. 25.

The training will be led by experienced mediation trainers and will consist of a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience in role-play case studies.

Participants will receive training in communication and active listening skills; the role, value, types and history of mediation; and dealing with dispute resolution within a culturally diverse community.

The cost of the training is $250 and includes a training manual.

Lake County Mediations offers a reduced fee of $125 to anyone who has a demonstrated financial need and agrees to commit 25 volunteer hours to Lake County Mediations co-mediating and/or shadowing with experienced mediators.

Individuals seeking the reduced-fee option are required to participate in an interview prior to acceptance into the class.
