Lois Jane Newman (Darnell), age 65, of Lakeport, Calif., passed away Feb. 3, 2013.

She was born to the late Dempsey and Olive Darnell on July 19, 1947, in Springfield, Mass.

She graduated high school from Patton’s Christian Academy in Oakland, Calif. It was while attending Patton’s where she met and married John Newman of San Francisco. Together they lived and worked in the bay area for more than 30 years.

After retirement Lois moved to Lakeport to be close to family. Lois was a woman of deep faith in God, a kind and gentle soul with a loving and generous heart. She had boundless love for her family and friends. She will be missed but never forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Newman, and brother, Enoch Darnell.

She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her beloved brothers, Tim (Susie) Darnell of Lakeport, and John (Laurie) Darnell of Susanville, Calif.; adoring nieces and nephews, Jennifer Seligman and Joshua Darnell, Jeremiah and Christopher Darnell, Tyler Darnell; and sisters-in-law, Stacey Darnell-De la Vera, Pam and Patty.

Her best friend, who was like a sister to her, Chris Miller, and dearly loved goddaughter, Joy, also survives Lois. She also leaves behind numerous loving family and friends.

A memorial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Rocky Point Care Center, 825 16th St. Lakeport, with the Pastor Glenn Hayes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the charity of your choice.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Rocky Point Care Center for their love and constant support to Lois.

Martha Emma Lorene North Doerpinghaus Kreft (Young)
Jan. 27, 1926-Dec. 22, 2012

Does such a lengthy name denote multiple personalities? Perhaps it denotes a woman who wore many different hats (depending upon whom she was relating to).

To me, she was the light of my life and the bane of my existence. An example of leadership in the pioneering realm of Safeway store management, she stepped down and finished her career at Clearlake Safeway as a clerk back in the arms of union security readying for retirement (and losing husband No. 1).

After spending her early retirement in Arizona (and two husbands later), she returned to live out her life in Lake County.

Starting her life in Arkansas, she then spent a stint as a pipe welder at Treasure Island in California during the war years before going on to bring five lovely children into the world (Judy, Tommy, Billye, Kenny and Peggy) being predeceased by Billye and Kenny and predeceased by all three husbands (Bill Doerpinghaus, Paul Kreft and Warren Young).

She is not only survived by three of her children but by 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren (I think).

Memorial remembrances will be celebrated May 12 (Mother’s Day) – doesn’t get better than that – she was quite the mother; may she rest in peace.
